Carthage and Daingerfield Looking to Make History

The Carthage Bulldogs and the Daingerfield Tigers are looking to make history as they enter the 2010 football season. The Bulldogs and the Tigers are each coming off back to back state championships in 2008 and 2009. The titles were the first two in school history for the Bulldogs. While the Tigers captured their fourth and fifth titles. But, now both East Texas teams are seeking to accomplish what only an elite few have accomplished before: win three titles in a row. Only eleven teams have accomplished this feat. Here is a list of those teams who have won at least three consecutive state championships and the years they won those titles:

OMAHA PEWITT BRAHMAS

The Word: The Brahmas began the 2009 season ranked in the top ten by many media outlets. However, the Bulls’ season got off to a rather inauspicious start. First, the Brahmas lost their all-state fullback, D.J. Burleson, to injury during the off-season. Then, the Bulls were crushed by Arp and Daingerfield the first two weeks of the season by a combined score of 97-7. The Brahmas regrouped, however, and won their next nine ball games en route to a district championship and a first round playoff win before being bounced in the second round by a rejuvenated Aubrey team. After the loss of Burleson, the Brahmas needed someone to step up at the fullback position. Bam Finley was that guy. Finley was expected to contribute mainly on defense in 2009, but was forced into the fullback role. Finley ran for more than 1000 yards in 2009 despite battling injuries throughout the season. The offensive line will be important for the Brahmas’ ground attack. Senior Jordan Nix will be asked to anchor the line. Others who may contribute on the offensive line include J.B. Betts, Caleb Tinsley, and Tyren Evans. Donavan Jarvis may get the first shot at the quarterback position. Although the Brahmas don’t go to the air often, when they do they will have a reliable target in tight end Kade Cox. Also look for junior Sedrick Johnson to be more involved in the offense in 2010. Defensively, the Brahmas will lean on their linebacking corpse which will include Justin Goforth and Tanner Wright along with Betts and Finley. Omaha Pewitt is the only playoff team from a year ago in this new district, and the Brahmas are the best bet to win the district title in 2010.
COOPER BULLDOGS

The Word: The Bulldogs improved greatly in 2009, nearly matching their win total from the three previous years combined. But, the five wins were not enough to get the Bulldogs into the playoffs. In 2010, Coach Green is hoping to get the Bulldogs into the playoffs for the first time in five years. There is reason for optimism. Second team all-district quarterback Ty Huie is a multi-sport athlete with good quickness and athleticism. He will have a real go-to guy in backfield mate Montrel Roberts. Roberts was the district new-comer of the year after rushing for 869 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore. Senior wide receiver Dan Beeler will provide Huie with a target on the outside. Up front, Lucas Lehman will lead the offensive line with help from Landon Rackley. On defense, Roy Pierce and Lucas Lehman will hold down a couple linebacker positions. Keyon Walker and Montrel Roberts will likely patrol the secondary. Senior Zach Harrison will be asked to lead the defensive line. Cooper has a chance to make the playoffs in 2010 if Coach Green can find a way to put together an offensive line that will lose four starters from last year’s team.
PARIS CHISUM MUSTANGS

The Word: The Chisum Mustangs won their first four games in 2009 before dropping four of their final six to finish 6-4. Coach Hasley will have to find a way to replace quarterback and defensive back Jeremy Eddington who has moved on to play football for the Rice Owls. Senior T.J. Briscoe will be asked to carry much of the offensive load and may be asked to move under center for the Mustangs in 2010. Fellow senior Mason Justiss will see the ball come his way as well. Receivers Fillip and Brad Gann may see more balls thrown their way as last year’s top receiver Zach Millsap was lost to graduation. Seniors Kyle Hasley, Stephen North, Lane McKenzie and Landon Smith will all likely see time on the offensive line. Hasley was a second team all-district performer in 2009, and Smith has good size at 280 pounds. The defense should be led by defensive end Hasley who led the team in sacks and linebackers Stephen North, Brad Gann and Mason Justiss who each showed a knack for finding the football at times. Landon Smith is also a top performer on the defensive line as is defensive end Donterious Record. If the Mustangs can find a way to replace their star quarterback they may find themselves fighting for a playoff spot in their new district.
RIVERCREST REBELS

The Word: Longtime coach and Clarksville, Texas native Allen Cross returns to East Texas to take over the head coaching job at Rivercrest. Cross spent the last two years coaching 1A Muenster where he compiled a 15-10 record and lead the Hornets to the regional semifinal round in 2009. Coach Cross takes over a Rivercrest program that is looking to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. The Rebels should benefit from the new alignment as they will be competing with schools of similar size. There is reason for optimism for Coach Cross’s club. The Rebels will welcome back dual-threat quarterback Brady Kennedy and leading rusher Jordan White for their senior seasons. The Rebel offense will also benefit from the return of several top receivers in Kyle McCuller, Jacob Wright and Luke Wright. Rebuilding the offensive line will be a priority for the Rebels. Spencer Wilson and Jordan Thompson should each find time on the Rebel front line. Defensively, the Rebels will be anchored by linebackers Shelby Steen, Doyle Brooks and John English. Kennedy, McCuller and White will spend time in the secondary for the Rebels. Meanwhile, sophomore Daniel Kasal should be a contributor on offense and defense for Coach Cross. The Rebels should improve on their win total from a year ago.
DEKALB BEARS

The Word: The Bears suffered through a dismal season in 2009. The 0-10 finish was the worst for the Bears in over a decade. The first order of business for the Bears has to be correcting an offense that produced only 74 points all season. That job is made all the more difficult by the loss of starting quarterback Mathew Davis and and leading rusher Jermese Reid. Senior fullback Chucky Slade will be asked to shoulder much of the offensive load with Davis and Reid gone. Senior Chance Coleman may get the first shot at the starting quarterback position, but junior Clay Williams may challenge Coleman for time under center. If the Bears choose to throw the ball, tight ends Christian LaToof and John Burkhart should make good targets. Senior center Clay Blackburn is the most experienced player on the Bears’ offensive line. He will be joined up front by guards Garrett Bartlett and Chad Wherry. Blackburn and Bartlett will also anchor the defensive line for the Bears while Slade will lead the linebacking corpse. Meanwhile, Tyler Bershears, Chas Montgomery and Clay Williams will man the secondary. LaToof is a sure footed kicker and will help bolster the Bears’ special teams. While a playoff spot is probably a reach, expect a much better showing by the Bears in 2010.
COMO-PICKTON EAGLES

The Word: The Eagles are looking for their first winning season since 2004. Many Eagles fans had hoped that the realignment would find them dropping to the 1A ranks. That was not to be. Although, the split division format will mean Como-Pickton will be competing with schools more their size, the Eagles will still be one of the smallest enrollments in 2A. The Eagles will have a few key pieces returning from a team that went 2-8 in 2009. Quarterback Zach Carpenter returns for his senior year to lead the Eagles’ offense. Carpenter’s favorite target also returns in the form of junior speedster Trevor Cagle. Cagle is a good athlete with great speed that will only get better with another year of experience. Junior Brodie Ogle and sophomore Bryce Steele are two additional weapons that the offense will have at its disposal. Steele was the MVP of the junior varsity team in 2009 and has good size and speed (6’0” 200, 4.7). Coyt Butler returns to anchor the offensive line while fellow senior Mike Lageschaar will solidify the Eagles’ defensive line. Linebacker Julian Ramirez led the team in tackles a year ago. Senior Angel Mercado will handle the kicking duties. The Eagles should compete for wins in their new district.

The Word: The Daingerfield Tigers finished the 2009 season with an emphatic 62-14 win over Bushland for their fifth state title in school history. The win completed the Tigers’ second straight 15-1 campaign and capped off back to back state titles. The Tigers have had an amazing run and look to continue their winning ways in 2010. If the Tigers are going to get back to the state championship game for a third straight year, they will have to find a way to replace super talented athletes like wide receiver Chris Jones (Texas) and runningback KoKo Smith (Sam Houston State) along with a slew of defensive starters. While replacing such talent is impossible for most 2A schools, the Tigers seem to churn out extraordinary talent on a yearly basis. After winning state titles as a sophomore and as a junior, quarterback Tyler Boyd is back for his senior campaign. Boyd has thrown for better than 4300 yards and 57 touchdowns over the last two years. His main receiving target figures to be Keyarris Garrett. The 6’5” Garrett hauled in 10 touchdown receptions in 2009. The offensive line should be a strength for the Tigers in 2010. TCU commit, Shayvion Hatten, returns to anchor the line along with teammates Donald Bryant and Jesse Hansen. Lamarse Lafayette will get the first shot as the feature runningback. Lafayette is not tall (5’7”), but is strong and possesses breakaway speed. On defense, the Tigers return only two starters, but they are as good as they come. Middle linebacker, Steve Edmond, a University of Texas commit, may be the best defensive player in the state. At 6’3” and 235 pounds, Edmond possesses long arms that allow him to gobble up opposing runners. Edmond is an intimidating presence in the middle of Daingerfield’s pressure 3-3 stack defense. The other returning starter, David Mims, is a shut down corner with the speed and ability to play at the next level. Other contributors on defense figure to be defensive back, Aaron Lewis, linebacker, D’vonte Turner and nose tackle, Odeyssius Chism. Daingerfield will once again have one of the more talented teams in 2A. The offense will need to carry the defense early in the season until some of the new starters on defense have a chance to settle into their new roles. If the defense can come together in time for the playoffs, the Tigers will once again be primed for another playoff run.
NEW BOSTON LIONS

The Word: After spending the past two seasons in 3A, the Lions return to the 2A ranks in 2010. The Lions finished the 2009 season at 5-4 and just out of the playoff hunt in the very tough district 16-3A. The return to 2A should bode well for the Lions who were a combined 14-7 during their last two years in 2A. If the Lions’ return to 2A is going to be a successful one, they are going to have to correct a defense that gave up nearly 23 points a game in 2009, including almost 34 points a game over their last five games. Improvement on defense may be on the way with the return of talented defensive backs Darrion Wade and Terence Lomax. On offense, the Lions will feature the running game behind junior runningback Shakeem Jefferson, who was the 16-3A newcomer of the year in 2009. All-district offensive lineman Joe Kasitati will try to pave the way for Jefferson and give quarterback Wade time to throw to Lomax. Another player to keep an eye on is Tevin Warren (6'1" 210, 4.7) who figures to contribute on both sides of the ball for the Lions. New Boston should find their new district significantly easier than the one the Lions competed in last year. While the playoffs are a strong possibility, the Lions probably don’t have enough to dethrone Daingerfield as district champs.
PRAIRILAND PATRIOTS

The Word: For the second year in a row, the Patriots won their first 9 games in largely convincing fashion. And, for the second year in a row, the Patriots dropped their final two games of the season and failed to get out of the first round of the playoffs. The 2009 version of the Prairiland Patriots featured a stingy defense that surrendered less than 12 points a game. In fact, only one team scored more than 15 points on the Patriots all year. The Patriots will have to reload in 2010 if they are going to make the playoffs for the fourth straight year. Standout runningback and defensive end Randal Sessums will be hard to replace. Brandon Graham figures to get the first shot at taking over the running duties. He should have some space to maneuver with senior offensive linemen Todd Fendley and Tanner Beard along with junior Taren Sartor blocking upfront. On defense, linebacker Graham and defensive tackle Brian Jones will lead the Patriots defense. Prairiland has made the playoffs the last three years, but with only three playoff spots available in each district in 2A and with the defending state champions and New Boston in their district, making the playoffs just got a whole lot harder for the Patriots.
REDWATER DRAGONS

The Word: The Dragons continued to make progress in Coach Jeff Stine’s second year at the helm. Redwater’s flexbone offense produced 23 points a game. The offense should be just as productive in 2010 with fullback Dewey Fleming and runningbacks Will Burris and Matt Hendricks churning out yardage along with standout Dorian Hankins. Seniors Chance Edwards, Kobie Lee, Jesse Roberson, Lee Cecil, and Travis Hanna should man the offensive line. Meanwhile, Austin Barnett will be a target when the Dragons choose to go to the air. Even more impressive than the Dragons’ offense was their defense, which held opponents to under 11 points a game in 2009. But replacing standout linebacker Colton Southworth will not be easy. Fleming will pull double duty and occupy one of the linebacker positions, while Hendricks, Burris and Hankins will headline a talented defensive secondary. Edwards, Roberson and Hanna will flex their muscles up front on the defensive line. If Redwater continues to improve under Stine, they could find themselves in the midst of a fight for a playoff spot.
HOOKS HORNETS

The Word: The Hornets improved their record by three wins in 2009 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2006. After losing their first three games, the Hornets won five of their next seven games before being bounced in the first round of the playoffs by Gunter. The offense should be in good shape with the return of talented quarterback Deon Wright. Josh Hughes, Kevin Sipes and Jerod Nellums will form a solid offensive line. Demetrius Burchette and Caleb Fields could share the running duties for the Hornets. On defense, Nellums and Blake Young will anchor the defensive line and junior Justin Howe will head up the linebacking corps. In the secondary, Tyler Rutledge and Kendrick Henderson will form an impressive tandem. If the Hornets want to make a push for the playoffs, they will have to find a way to improve on the 21 points a game they gave up in 2009.
QUEEN CITY BULLDOGS

The Word: The Bulldogs suffered through a difficult 2-8 season in 2009 and haven’t had a winning season since 2001. However, what may have been lost on some people is the fact that Queen City played one of the toughest schedules in 2A last year. The schedule featured six playoff teams, including two defending state champs (Prosper and Daingerfield). Although the Bulldogs took their lumps in 2009, they may be ready to take a significant step forward in 2010. The Bulldogs were very young in 2009, but will return 23 lettermen in 2010. On offense, Cody Willis, Trenton Garrett and Jammie Andrews will share the running duties for the Bulldogs. Braven Griffin, D.J. King, Chevy Smith, and Colton Savage all return to form what should be a much more experienced offensive line. And, Chris Martin will try to provide production from the wide receiver position. The defensive unit should be improved as well. Willis will occupy a position at inside linebacker, while Sadat Banks will line up at outside linebacker. Griffin and Charles Scales will help solidify the defensive line. Trevion Hunter will lead the secondary. Queen City faces a tough challenge in a competitive district, but the Bulldogs appear to be headed in a positive direction.
