MALAKOFF TIGERS
Enrollment: 304 (5)
2009 Record: 8-3 2A Div. 1 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Jamie Driskell
The Players: Zack Green (Sr., OL), Marquise Dowell (Sr., WR/DB), Josh Crockett (Sr., RB/DB), Andrew Keheley (Sr., OL), Cody Davies (Sr., TE/LB), Terry Shamlin (Sr., P), Caesar Garcia (So., K), Truman Dowell (Sr., WR/LB), Jacob Teague (Jr., QB)
The Word: After being hired to replace Ronny Reed as head coach and athletic director last January, Coach Jamie Driskell rolled up his sleeves and led a revival of Tiger football in Malakoff. After going 1-19 the previous two seasons, the Tigers put together an 8-3 season in 2009 and captured a district co-championship. Malakoff will have to replace quarterback Bernard Hall who has graduated. Look for junior Jacob Teague to get the first shot under center. The offense will have a couple of play makers returning in wide receiver Marquise Dowell and tight end Cody Davies. Up front the Tigers will be led by a couple of big offensive linemen in Zack Green and Andrew Keheley. Green is 6’3” and 260 pounds, while Keheley goes 5’11” and 285 pounds. The defense should be solid with Dowell at defensive back and Davies at linebacker. Truman Dowell will fill another linebacker position for the Tigers. Keheley and Green will each probably spend time on the defensive line. Josh Crockett is a solid defensive back that will help the Tiger’s pass defense. Special teams should be a strength for the Tigers as punter Terry Shamlin and kicker Caesar Garcia were both second team all-district in 2009. It remains to be seen whether Coach Driskell can repeat the success his team had in his first year at the helm, but there is a lot of optimism surrounding the Tigers. The Tigers could compete for another district title.
TEAGUE LIONS
Enrollment: 339 (3)
2009 Record: 1-9
The Coach: Josh Finney
The Players: Jake McClain (Sr., QB); Wade Venable (Sr., TE/OLB), Fernando Zambrano (Sr., WR/DB), Johnnie Johnson (Sr., OL/DL), Timothy Campbell (Sr., TE/DE), Jared Phillips (Sr., QB/DB), Ryan Lawrence (Sr., WR/DB), Larry Busby (Jr., RB/DB), Casey Samuels (Jr., RB/DB), Dustin Hunt (Jr., TE/DE), Juan Perez (Jr., OL/DL)
The Word: The Lions were very young in 2009 and suffered through a 1-9 campaign as a result. But, in 2010 the Lions will return 24 lettermen and 12 starters. So, there is reason for excitement. However, most of the excitement may be generated not by what Teague has returning but by a couple of new arrivals. Coach Josh Finney takes over as head coach of the Lions after spending the last four years at 1A Maud where he tallied a 38-12 record and made the playoffs four straight years. On top of that, quarterback Jake McClain is trading his Maud Cardinal jersey for a Teague Lion jersey in 2010. McClain, who quarterbacked the Maud Cardinals the last three years, will play his senior year for the Lions and Coach Finney. McClain will have plenty of help in the backfield too. Runningback Larry Busby is one of the fastest players in 2A. Busby won state in the 100 meter dash in May and is a multi-sport athlete. Busby’s explosiveness and McClain’s experience should give the Lions a formidable combination in the offensive backfield. Casey Samuels will get a fair share of carries for the Lions as well. And, receiver Ryan Lawrence has a good combination of height and speed to be an attractive target on the outside. On defense, the Lions will be led by linebacker Wade Venable. Junior Dustin Hunt should help up front from his defensive end position as well. Fernando Zambrano will occupy a defensive back position and will likely be joined by Busby, Lawrence and Samuels who all figure to play both ways. The additions of Finney and McClain make Teague a contender for a district championship.
CROCKETT BULLDOGS
Enrollment: 393 (1)
2009 Record: 1-9
The Coach: Paul Parsons
The Players: Antonio Chimney (Sr., OL), Trevon Dickenson (Sr., RB/LB), Jonathan Wolf (Sr., RB/SS), Kwamee James (Sr., WR/DB), DeVonte Lane (Sr, FS), D’Vaughan Le (Jr., LB), Denell Parker (Jr., RB), C.J. Wheeler (Jr., QB/WR), Dominique Wheeler (Jr., WR), Zach Stone (Jr., DL), Tevin Collins (So., OL), Carson Earp (So., QB/LB), Michael McKnight (So., WR/DB)
The Word: The Bulldogs endured one of the worst seasons in school history in 2009. The 1-9 record was the worst by a Crockett team in more than 30 years. Don’t expect the Bulldogs to stay down long. The drop down to 2A will certainly help the Bulldogs who will have the largest enrollment in the district. But, the return of some super talented football players will help even more. The Bulldog offense will feature speed in the form of runningback Jonathan Wolf (5’10” 175) and wide receiver Dominique Wheeler. Senior wide receiver Kwamee James should line up opposite Wheeler and provide another playmaker at the receiver position. Meanwhile, runningback Trevon Dickenson, at 210 pounds, will play the “thunder” to Wolf’s “lightening” out of the Bulldog backfield. The offensive line will be anchored by Antonio Chimney who has good feet and great size at nearly 300 pounds. The Bulldog defense will be lead by speedster linebacker D’Vaughan Le and Wolf at strong safety. Senior free safety DeVonte Lane adds a playmaker to the secondary. And, junior lineman Zach Stone solidifies the defensive line for the Bulldogs. Crockett has some dynamic skilled players and could really improve on last year’s win total if the team comes together during two-a-days.
TROUP TIGERS
Enrollment: 294 (6)
2009 Record: 2-8
The Coach: Chuck Griffin
The Players: Ryan Nichols (Sr., RB/DB), Cameron Searcy (Sr., LB), Caleb Gibson (Sr., DB), Ethan Isaacks (Sr., OL); Patrick Alonzo (Sr., OL/DL)
The Word: Not much went right for the Troup Tigers in 2009. Their best player, Derrikk Thompson, was injured much of the year and the Tigers managed only two wins. One thing that did go right for the Tigers was runningback Ryan Nichols who helped power the Troup offense after Thompson went down. Nichols will be asked to shoulder much of the load in 2010. He will be running behind a couple of big bodies in Ethan Isaacks and Patrick Alonzo. Isaacks is 6’3” 275 and Alonzo is 6’1” 260. The Tigers’ defense will be lead by all-district linebacker Cameron Searcy (5’11” 175). Nichols will pull double duty and play safety for the Tigers where he was an all-district performer in 2009. Caleb Gibson is a solid defensive back who will help Nichols in the secondary. New Coach Chuck Griffin takes over a Troup team that is looking to return to its winning ways of the mid-2000s when the Tigers went 44-8 between 2003 and 2006. Coach Griffin will employ the spread offense with the Tigers, so the offense could be interesting to watch this season. The Tigers figure to be fighting with Teague, Crockett and Malakoff for a playoff spot.
TRINITY TIGERS
Enrollment: 313 (4)
2009 Record: 2-8
The Coach: Chuck Langston
The Players: Jay Johnson (Sr., RB/DB), Reid Felchek (Sr., FB/LB), Jessa Valenta (Sr., OL), Korey Smith (Sr., WR), Cole Smith (Sr., QB), Kirby Brooks (Jr., LB)
The Word: The Tigers are 27-71 over the last decade and haven’t reached the playoffs since 2004. Chuck Langston’s club will have their work cut out for them in their new district. Senior Jay Johnson figures to lead the offense. He will need help from Reid Felcheck who will tote the rock from his fullback position. Cole Smith (5’11” 160) will take over fulltime at quarterback after passing for 600 yards last year. Meanwhile, Korey Smith should provide a target at the wide receiver position. Jessa Valenta (6’1” 290) will anchor the offensive line. Johnson and Felcheck both figure to play defense as well and try to improve a Tiger defense that gave up nearly 39 points a game in 2009. They will be joined by junior linebacker Kirby Brooks who has good size and speed. Coach Langston will need to plug several holes left by graduation in order to compete in this competitive district.
ELKHART ELKS
Enrollment: 363 (2)
2009 Record: 1-9
The Coach: John Adair
The Players: Cam Reeves (Jr., QB/RB/DB), Austin Huggins (Sr., OL), Lane Grant (Sr., QB/P/S), Bryce Fillmore (Jr., K/RB)
The Word: The Elks haven’t had a winning season since 2004 and have won only four games the last three seasons. John Adair takes over as head coach after spending much of his 20 year coaching career as an assistant at Elkhart. The first order of business for Coach Adair and the Elks will be replacing the linebacking corpse. Linebackers Brien Hill, Bladerick Arceneaux, and Dustin Tanner were all lost to graduation. The second order of business will likely be igniting an offense that scored only 94 points all year and managed just 23 total points in their five district games. Junior athlete Cam Reeves is a great place to start. Reeves garnered all-district nods on offense and defense in 2009. Reeves will be looking to Austin Huggins to pave the way up front. Huggins, an all-district performer in 2009, returns for his senior year to anchor the offensive line. Meanwhile, senior Lane Grant should have the opportunity to contribute on offense, defense and special teams for the Elks. The Elks have a new district and a new coach and Elks fans are hoping for the best.

2A Division II, District 9 Preview
ARP TIGERS
Enrollment: 288 (1)
2009 Record: 12-1 2A Div. I Quarterfinalist
The Coach: Dale Irwin
The Players: Jamie Warren (Sr., DT), Andrew Brown (Sr., WR/DB), Seth Stroupe (Sr., LB), Cody Rosenberg (Sr., DE), Dylan Stainback (Sr., OL), Zach Howard (Sr., OL), J.C. Bernhart (Sr., TE/DE), Juan Padron (Sr., DT), Delvin Bagley (Sr., WR/DB), Kyle Copeland (Jr., QB), Kasey McClendon (Jr., RB), Bryan McKnight (Jr., OL), Bryce Chilton (Jr., OL), Michael Roberson (So., WR/DB)
The Word: Coach Dale Irwin’s Arp Tigers have gone 23-2 over the last two seasons falling in the quarterfinals to Kirbyville in 2008 and 2009. The Tigers lose several impressive athletes to graduation, including Lavocheya Cooper (Oklahoma State) and Michael Wade (Sam Houston State). But, don’t feel sorry for Coach Irwin, the cupboards are far from empty in Arp. The Tigers will return several key players on both sides of the ball. The Tigers return key contributors to an offense that averaged nearly 41 points a game in 2009. It starts up front for the Tigers where tackles Dylan Stainback and Bryan McKnight are as big as they come. Stainback measures in at close to 6’5” and 350 pounds while McKnight tips the scales at 6’5” and 250 pounds. Senior Zach Howard, a two year starter, will join McKnight and Stainback on the offensive line. A couple of juniors will carry the load for the Tigers in the offensive backfield. Quarterback Kyle Copeland was the district newcomer of the year in 2009, when he threw for nearly 1900 yards and ran for 500 more. Fellow classmate Kasey McClendon made quite an impression as well, rushing for more than 600 yards and scoring double digit touchdowns. At receiver, senior Andrew Brown figures to be Copeland’s favorite target. Delvin Bagley should also see some balls thrown his way. It will be hard to improve on the defensive side of the ball, where the Tigers surrendered less than 10 points a game in 2009. But, Coach Irwin has several defensive playmakers that hope to do just that. Defensive tackle Jamie Warren (6’2” 290) is a rock in the middle of the Tiger defense. Warren has attracted the attention of college scouts with his combination of size and speed. Cody Rosenberg (6’3” 220) and J.C. Bernhart will join Warren on the defensive line. Seth Stroupe (5’9” 195) will lead the Tigers’ linebacking corps. Stroupe returns for his senior season after leading the Tigers in tackles, forced fumbles and sacks in 2009. McClendon will likely pull double duty and fill a linebacking position as well. Junior Michael Randall (6’1” 175) will also occupy an outside linebacker position for the Tigers. In the secondary, Delvin Bagley will join Bran Holloway to form a speedy cornerback tandem. Meanwhile, the safety position is one to keep an eye on as sophomore Michael Roberson will be asked to fill the big shoes left by the departure of Lavocheya Cooper. Arp is looking to get to the state championship for the first time in school history. The new split division alignment in 2A may help Arp accomplish this goal as the Tigers will not have to face much larger schools in the playoffs. Expectations are understandably high in Arp. And, with so many underclassmen playing large roles for the Tigers, Arp should be a threat to win it all for several years to come.
WEST RUSK RAIDERS
Enrollment: 216 (4)
2009 Record: 8-3 2A Div II Area Finalist
The Coach: John Frazier
The Players: Josh Medford (Sr., QB/LB), Chris Johnson (Sr., QB/RB/CB), Tony Gordon (Sr., WR), Chris Savala (Sr., LB), Dewayne Fisher (Sr., RB/LB), Santos Gonzales (Sr., RB/LB), Johnny Fauver (Sr., LB), Dillon McCoy (Sr., DT), D’Land Jones (Sr., OL/DT), Brian Sanders (Sr., OL/DL), Trent Edney (Sr., OL/DT), Sam Carter (Jr., WR/LB), Keenon Murphy (Jr., DT)
The Word: The Raiders continue to improve under Coach John Frazier. West Rusk is 23-10 in the three years under Frazier after winning only 9 games combined in the six years prior to his arrival. In 2010, the Raiders will be one of the most experienced teams in the state with a slew of seniors and a host of three year starters returning. The offense returns nearly all of their skilled players. Quarterback Josh Medford (6’1” 190), who tallied more than 1600 combined yards in 2009, is one of the area’s top athletes. However, Medford may step aside and let the speedy Chris Johnson take over the reins at quarterback so that Medford can concentrate on the defensive side of the ball where he tallied 92 tackles last year. Meanwhile, runningbacks Dewayne Fisher and Santos Gonzales combined to rush for more than 1400 yards in 2009. Wide receiver Tony Gordon (6’0” 185) is a speedster with big play ability. And, wide receiver James Jordan returns to the lineup after missing time last season due to injury. At 6’4” Jordan will give Johnson a big target down the field. On the offensive line, Trent Edney, D’land Jones and Levi Wingate each started all 11 games for the Raiders in 2009. Jose Lopez, who started seven games for the Raiders in 2009, will join Edney, Jones and Wingate. After missing the 2009 season due to injury, senior Brian Sanders will find a spot on the offensive line as well. The Raiders’ defense, which gave up only 12 points a game in 2009, returns eight starters. A pair of three year starters, Chris Savala and Johnny Fauver, will head up the linebacking corps. Inside linebackers Savala and Fauver are the heart and soul of the Raiders’ 4-4 split defense. Each tallied more than 100 tackles last season. Medford will move from safety to outside linebacker this year and make the Raiders’ defense even more formidable against the run. Gonzales and Fisher will each see time at the outside linebacker positions as well. Josh Reese, Brian Sanders, Dillon McCoy and Kennon Murphy will form the defensive line. McCoy tallied 19 tackles for loss last season. The Raiders’ secondary will feature a ton of speed with Chris Johnson and Terrance Murphy each holding down a corner spot. With all of the experience returning, the Raiders are excited about the 2010 season, and for good reason. Many believe the Raiders have a chance to knock off the Arp Tigers for the district title and make a deep run in the playoffs.
FRANKSTON INDIANS
Enrollment: 231 (3)
2009 Record: 5-5
The Coach: Sam Wells
The Players: Jamal Allen (Sr., QB/LB), Jabralon Allen (Sr., RB/LB), Braderick Fields (Sr., DT), Adam Pessink (Sr., TE/DT), Clint Saunders (Sr., OL), Jacob Stovall (Sr., DT), Damon Birch (Sr., WR/DB), Treston Coleman (Jr., RB), Michael Warren (Jr., WR/CB), Dillon Dale (Jr., OL), Caleb Williams (So., CB)
The Word: 2009 started in dramatic fashion for the Indians as they upset eventual 1A state champions Cayuga in the first game of the season. But, Coach Sam Wells’ team dropped three of their last four games and narrowly missed the playoffs for the second straight year. But, the return of brothers Jamal and Jabralon Allen have Indian fans excited about the 2010 season. Both have committed to play football next year for the SFA Lumberjacks. Quarterback Jamal Allen tallied more than 1300 yards and 11 touchdowns a season ago. While Jabralon Allen racked up 133 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and garnered second team all-state honors. Jamal and Jabralon Allen will each play both ways for the Indians. Joining them on the offensive side of the ball will be junior runningback Treston Coleman (5’11” 210) who ran for more than 600 yards as a sophomore. Coleman looks like a player that can become a difference maker for the Indians. Receivers Michael Warren and Damon Birch will split wide for the Indians, and Adam Pessink (6’3” 225) will line up at tight end. Dustin House, Clint Saunders, Derek McNertney, Dillon Dale and Austin Pierce will form a rebuilt offensive line. Dale is huge at 6’2” and 323 pounds. Coach Wells will welcome back seven starters to man his 3-3-5 defense. Jacob Stovall, Braderick Fields and Adam Pessink will make up the defensive front. Fields, who tallied 17 tackles for loss and four sacks in 2009, has good size at 5’11” and 230. Jamison Paul (5’9” 190) will join Jamal and Jabralon Allen at inside linebacker, while Colton Delaney and Logan Smith will line up at outside linebacker. Speedsters Michael Warren and Caleb Williams will each hold down a corner position. Warren was an all-district defensive back as a sophomore. Senior Damon Birch will man the free safety position. The Indians are hoping that 2010 is the year that they can break through and capture a playoff spot. It will not be easy with Arp and West Rusk in the same district.
JOAQUIN RAMS
Enrollment: 201 (6)
2009 Record: 11-3 1A Div I Semifinalist
The Coach: Wayne Gandy
The Players: JaDerrick Norris (Sr., DB), Tyler McSwain (Sr., FB/LB), Shamorin Wilson (Sr., RB/DB), Chase Lambright (Sr., OL), Austin Underbrink (Jr., OL/DL), Austin Bloodgood (Jr., RB/LB), Kain Yates (Jr., DB), Holden Cummings (Jr., OL/LB)
The Word: The Rams went 11-3 in 2009 and advanced all the way to the 1A division 1 semifinals before being knocked out of the playoffs by eventual state champions Goldthwaite. The Rams bludgeoned teams with a powerful running game that helped the Rams’ offense average better than 34 points a game. But, Coach Wayne Gandy will have to find a way to replace runningback Jeffrey Rico who rushed for more than 2000 yards last season. Those rushing duties will likely fall to junior Austin Bloodgood who rushed for more than 500 yards as a sophomore. Seniors Tyler McSwain and Shamorin Wilson should also see considerable carries in Joaquin’s run oriented offense. McSwain ran for nearly 300 yards and five touchdowns in 2009. Offensive linemen Chase Lambright, Austin Underbrink and Holden Cummings will be asked to pave the way for the Rams offense. On defense, Cummings, McSwain and Bloodgood will form a solid linebacking corps. McSwain racked up more than 140 tackles and forced six fumbles last season. The defensive secondary will be led by JaDerrick Norris, who picked off seven passes in 2009. Joining Norris will be Shamorin Wilson and junior Kain Yates who combined for 5 interceptions last season. The Rams are coming off of the best season in school history. With the move up from 1A to 2A, Joaquin will be hard pressed to reproduce last year’s success. But, veteran coach Wayne Gandy has built the Rams into a consistent winning program. So, look for the Rams to be very competitive in their new district.
WINONA WILDCATS
Enrollment: 239 (2)
2009 Record: 2-8
The Coach: Darold Turner
The Players: Chase Ramirez (Sr., QB/SS), Ladarius Wheeler (Sr., RB/DB), Josh Timmons (Sr., RB/LB), Jaylyn Turner (Sr., OL), Antonio Wolford (Sr., WR/DB), Joseph Traylor (Sr., WR/DB), Sam Carroll (Sr., OL/DL), Kendell Moore (Sr., DB), Willie McGee (Sr., OL/DL), Damian Gordon (Jr., RB/DB), Joey Dikes (Jr., QB/LB), James Williams (Jr., OL/DL), David Ellis (Jr., OL/DL)
The Word: Wildcat fans endured a 2-8 season in 2009, and it’s been 16 years since Winona last made the playoffs. Things will not get any easier for the Wildcats as they move from one very competitive district into another. But, with 23 lettermen and 12 starters returning in 2010, the Wildcats can be cautiously optimistic about the future. The Wildcats will have to find a way to score points if they want to compete for a playoff spot. Winona averaged only 12 points a game in 2009 and topped 20 points in a game only twice all season. Senior Chase Ramirez and junior Joey Dykes could split time at the quarterback position for the Wildcats. Ladarius Wheeler will likely slide into the role of featured runningback. But, Josh Timmons and Damian Gordon will get a number of carries in the Wildcat offense as well. Big Jaylyn Turner (6’4” 310) is a stalwart on the offensive line and has attracted the attention of some college scouts. A pair of seniors, Sam Carroll and Will McGee, should also help anchor the offensive line. And, a couple of big juniors, Keenan Allen and David Ellis, could fill some holes up front as well. On defense, Sam Carroll racked up four sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 2009. Defensive back Ladarius Wheeler was also a playmaker on defense, recovering three fumbles last season. Defensive back Kendell Moore gives the Wildcats another big time playmaker in the secondary. Wildcat fans hope the large number of returning lettermen will be enough to help their team improve on last season’s win total.
GLADEWATER UNION GROVE LIONS
Enrollment: 214 (5)
2009 Record: 6-4
The Coach: Marty Moore
The Players: Dillon Penn (Sr., DB), Carlos Tennison (Sr., RB/DB), Colbert Sirkel (Sr., RB/LB), Dalton Bowery (Sr., TE/DL), Taylor Mayfield (Sr., RB/LB), Tyler Sorrells (Sr., RB/LB), Beau Davis (Jr., TE/DL), Tyler Webb (Jr., OL/DL), Mark Owens (Jr., OL/DL), Partrick Ryan (Jr., OL/DL), Hunter Gibson (Jr., RB/LB)
The Word: During the 2005 and 2006 seasons Jeff Ridens rushed for more than 3400 yards for Coach Marty Moore’s Lions. During that span the Lions went 10-10. The year after Ridens graduated the Lions went 1-9. During the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Richard Pittman racked up 2700 yards for the Lions. Again, the Lions went 10-10 during that two year stretch. Coach Moore hopes his team doesn’t have to endure another 1-9 season like 2007 before they find a replacement for their leading rusher. Likely candidates to replace Pittman are senior Carlos Tennison and junior Hunter Gibson. Taylor Mayfield and Tyler Sorrells may be in the mix for carries as well. Whoever ends up carrying the pigskin for the Lions, will be counting on the guys up front to give them space to maneuver. Patrick Ryan, Tyler Webb and Mark Owens figure to be the anchors of the offensive line. Owens has good size at 6’3” and 265 pounds. The Lions’ defense will be led by defensive back Dillon Penn (6’0” 170). Penn may be the best athlete on the team and will likely play a number of roles for Coach Moore this season. After winning their first four contests in 2009, the Lions dropped four of their last six games. Things will not get any easier this year for the Lions as they move into a very competitive district.
Enrollment: 288 (1)
2009 Record: 12-1 2A Div. I Quarterfinalist
The Coach: Dale Irwin
The Players: Jamie Warren (Sr., DT), Andrew Brown (Sr., WR/DB), Seth Stroupe (Sr., LB), Cody Rosenberg (Sr., DE), Dylan Stainback (Sr., OL), Zach Howard (Sr., OL), J.C. Bernhart (Sr., TE/DE), Juan Padron (Sr., DT), Delvin Bagley (Sr., WR/DB), Kyle Copeland (Jr., QB), Kasey McClendon (Jr., RB), Bryan McKnight (Jr., OL), Bryce Chilton (Jr., OL), Michael Roberson (So., WR/DB)
The Word: Coach Dale Irwin’s Arp Tigers have gone 23-2 over the last two seasons falling in the quarterfinals to Kirbyville in 2008 and 2009. McClendon will likely pull double duty and fill a linebacking position as well. Junior Michael Randall (6’1” 175) will also occupy an outside linebacker position for the Tigers.

2A Division I, District 9 Preview
TATUM EAGLES
Enrollment: 421 (1)
2009 Record: 6-5 3A Div. 2 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Andy Evans
The Players: B.J. Allen (Sr., RB/LB), Brandon Woodard (Sr., RB/LB), Desmond Fite (Sr., WR/DB), Carl Watkins (Sr., RB/DB), Neil Harkless (Sr., WR/DB), Kendall Bell (Sr., WR/DB), Phoenix Malone (Sr., WR/FS), Cullen Stone (Sr., TE/DE), Hunter Liles (Sr., OL/LB), David Nelson (Sr., OL/DL), Jaylen Overstreet (Jr., QB/LB), Justin Farrell (Jr., OL), LaDerron Johnson (Jr., DE)
The Word: In 2010, the Tatum Eagles return to the 2A ranks once again. The last time the Eagles spent time in the 2A classification Coach Andy Evans’ club went 26-4 over a two year stretch, captured a state title and played for another. After going 11-11 over the last two seasons while playing in the 3A ranks, Eagles fans should be excited about the possibilities of competing in 2A. The Tatum faithful can also be excited by the fact that the Eagles return some key pieces on both sides of the ball. Tatum’s offense will feature one of the better runningback tandems in 2A. Runningback B.J. Allen rushed for more than 1700 yards in 2009 and has the potential to score every time he touches the ball. He will be joined in the backfield by Brandon Woodard who piled up more than 1200 yards, while missing two games due to injury. Fellow senior Carl Watkins should see some carries as well in the Eagles’ offense. Junior Jaylen Overstreet (6’3” 205) figures to take the majority of snaps at quarterback. But, senior Desmond Fite could see some time at quarterback as well, when he is not lined up at wide receiver. Kendall Bell should see action at wide receiver along with speedster Phoenix Malone. Senior David Nelson and junior Justin Farrell (6’6” 302) will help anchor a huge offensive line. On defense, Coach Evans would like to improve upon the 27 points a game his team surrendered last season. Defensive end Cullen Stone was first team all-district in 2009 and should help solidify the defensive line. Junior LaDerron Johnson (6’3” 220) will likely man the other defensive end position. Hunter Liles, another first team all-district performer, will help lead the linebacking unit. Malone is yet another playmaker on defense from his free safety position. Allen, Woodard and Overstreet will likely all see time on the defensive side of the ball as well. The Eagles also have a sure-footed kicker in Samuel Zapata. Tatum will have as much speed and athleticism as any 2A team in the state. If Coach Evans can fill some holes left by graduation, particularly in the offensive line, the Eagles could make a deep run in the playoffs.
JEFFERSON BULLDOGS
Enrollment: 349 (4)
2009 Record: 6-6 2A Div. 1 Area Finalist
The Coach: Scott Hale
The Players: Damon Gray (Sr., RB/DB), Darian Frierson (Sr., DB), Justin Rawls (Sr., LB), Willie McCoy (Sr., OL), Karter Tomlinson (Sr., FB/DE), Drew Tidwell (Sr., TE), John Cunningham (Sr., OL), James McTyre (Sr., OL), Jecho Armington (Sr., WR), Kevin Harris (Sr., LB), Keenon Marshall (Sr., DL), Paul Potts (Sr., DL), Bailey Fratangelo (Jr., QB), Joe Hale (Jr., OL), Dennis Wilson (Jr., DL)
The Word: Jefferson finished 6-6 in 2009 and nearly pulled off an upset over the Arp Tigers in the second round of the playoffs. Coach Scott Hale will have to figure out a way to replace the super talented trio of Clarence Lee (Baylor), Destin Mosley (Kansas State), and Trevor Murphy (Colorado State) who have all moved on to the next level. One thing Coach Hale will have to work with in 2010 is speed. And, as the old adage goes, speed kills. On offense, the speed will be provided by senior tailback Damon Gray (5’11” 180). Gray possesses game breaking ability and figures to carry much of the load for the Bulldog offense. Joining Gray in the offensive backfield will be junior quarterback Bailey Fratangelo and senior fullback Karter Tomlinson. The 6’2” Fratangelo has the athleticism to play at the next level. The offensive line should be a strength with big 6’4” 315 pound Willie McCoy and 6’3” 280 pound James McTyre at the tackles. Joe Hale, Zach Powell and John Cunningham will join McCoy and McTyre up front for the Bulldogs. Jecho Armington and James Cole will line up at receiver and provide targets for Fratangelo, while senior Drew Tidwell will start at tight end. Jefferson’s 5-2 defense was a strong point for the Bulldogs last season and could be a strength again. Senior linebackers Justin Rawls and Kevin Harris will be the heart and soul of the Bulldog defense. Rawls led the team in tackles last season. Dennis Wilson, Keenon Marshall and Paul Potts, who will form the interior of the defensive line, all have good size. Tomlinson will occupy one defensive end position, while sophomore Sadarius Figures will be asked to fill the other. In the secondary, Gray will join Darian Frierson at the corners with Deion Williams and Davonta Williams at the safety positions. All four members of the secondary are burners and Gray and Frierson are two of the more talented cornerbacks in the area. With 13 starters back, the Bulldogs have more than enough talent to challenge Tatum for the district title.
WHITE OAK ROUGHNECKS
Enrollment: 408 (2)
2009 Record: 9-2 2A Div. 1 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Tracy Blankenship
The Players: Ben Adams (Sr., OL), Taylor Goll (Sr., WR), Josh Lettow (Sr., DL), Jake Moyers (Sr., DB), Connor Sharp (Sr., QB/K), Cody Hall (Sr., OL), Randall Bernethy (Sr., OL), Dillon Bales (Sr., FB/LB), Tom McMahon (Sr., LB)
The Word: Since moving back to 2A before the 2008 season, Coach Tracy Blankenship’s club has gone 17-5 and made the playoffs two years in a row. However, the Roughnecks haven’t won a playoff game since 1998 and making the playoffs just got a whole lot more difficult now that the Roughnecks will be sharing a district with the likes of Tatum and Jefferson. To make matters worse, Coach Blankenship will have to find a replacement for standout runningback/linebacker Jackson McCurdy. Senior fullback Dillon Bales will likely be asked to fill a larger role in the Roughnecks’ run-oriented offense. But, Bales could be pushed for playing time by sophomore Jeffrey Davis. Meanwhile, Connor Sharp returns at quarterback to operate White Oak’s “wing T” offense. Offensive tackle Ben Adams is a stalwart on the offensive line. The 6’4” 270 pound Adams is garnering attention from the likes of TCU and Baylor. Adams will be joined up front by Cody Hall and Randall Bernethy. Senior wide receiver Taylor Goll (6’4” 190) will give the Roughnecks a play maker on the outside. On defense, senior linebacker Tom McMahon will be asked to fill the void left by the departure of all-state linebacker Adam Thompson. All-district defensive lineman Josh Lettow returns to anchor the defensive line. And, defensive backs Goll and Jake Moyers will occupy the secondary for Coach Blankenship. White Oak will have to fill some holes left by graduation. But, with 8 starters returning there are still enough pieces in place for the Roughnecks to compete for a playoff spot.
NEW DIANA EAGLES
Enrollment: 316 (6)
2009 Record: 7-3
The Coach: Roger Adams
The Players: Jacob Witt (Sr., OL/DL), Cody Belt (Sr., TE/LB), Beau Brewer (Sr., RB/DB), Dee Newsome (Sr., WR/DE), Connor Hounsel (Sr., WR/DB), Darrell Wise (Sr., RB/LB), Brian Bouzek (Sr., OL/DL), Travasil Dumas (Sr., OL/DL), Antonio Barron (Jr., RB/LB), Dustin Whitley (Jr., OL/LB), Trent Davis (So., OL/DL)
The Word: New Diana finished the season at 7-3 and got bounced in the first round of the playoffs by eventual state champ Daingerfield. The Eagles’ two regular season losses came by a combined 3 points (14-13 to Elysian Fields and 55-53 to White Oak). Coach Roger Adams will look to runningback Beau Brewer (5’9” 180) to provide the Eagles with a spark on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive lineman Jacob Witt will provide the space for Brewer to maneuver. At 6’3” and 275 pounds, Witt has good size. Joining Witt on the offensive line will be seniors Brian Bouzek and Travasil Dumas. Junior Dustin Whitely and sophomore Trent Davis should contribute up front for the Eagles as well. Meanwhile, talented tight end Cody Belt (6’2” 230) is back for his senior campaign. The Eagles will be led on defense by defensive backs Brewer and Connor Hounsel. Brewer tallied 132 tackles a year ago. Expect Witt to pull double duty and hold down a spot on the defensive line along side defensive end Dee Newsome. And, Belt should fill a linebacker spot for Coach Adams’ squad. New Diana will be much less experienced in 2010 and might find it difficult to improve upon the seven wins they had last season. But with a hand full of starters back on each side of the ball, the Eagles will be fighting for a playoff spot in their new district. New Diana’s playoff hopes may hinge on an October 8th showdown with Whiteoak.
HARMONY EAGLES
Enrollment: 332 (5)
2009 Record: 7-3
The Coach: Tim Russell
The Players: Luke Laminack (Sr., RB/DB), Eric Whittemore (Sr., OL/DL), Cody Weems (Sr., OL/DL), Chris Burris (Sr., WR/DB), Thomas Green (Sr., WR/DB), Thomas Muhlbach (Sr., WR/DB), Hunter King (Sr., WR/DL), Max Busse (Sr., WR/DE), B.J. Moses (Sr., OL/DL), Andrew Conway (Sr., OL/DL), Raymond Denton (Sr., OL/DL), Wesley Schoon (Jr., QB/DB), Casey Whittemore (Jr., OL/DL), Charlie Moler (Jr., TE/LB)
The Word: The Harmony Eagles spent much of the 2009 season as one of the favorites to win their district. But, an early district loss to New Diana and a second district loss to rival Harleton in the final game of the season left the Eagles out of the playoffs. Coach Shane Wilson will have to say goodbye to a large class of seniors and find a way to replace his quarterback and his leading tackler from last season. One positive for the Eagles is the return of leading rusher Luke Laminack (5’10” 175) who racked up more than 1000 yards in 2009. Junior Wesley Schoon will likely take over the quarterbacking duties for the Eagles. Seniors Eric Whittemore, Cody Weems, B.J. Moses, Andrew Conway and Raymond Denton all figure to contribute on the offensive line. Whittemore will lead the defensive line as well, along with defensive end Max Busse. With only 4 starters returning, Harmony will need several young players to step up and fill the holes left by the departure of 18 seniors. The Eagles may go through some growing pains in 2010.
SABINE CARDINALS
Enrollment: 377.5 (3)
2009 Record: 3-7
The Coach: Jerry Baker
The Players: Shane Lewis (Sr., WR/DE), Caleb Moyers (Sr., QB/DB), Kendrick Chumley (Sr., WR/DB), Zach Brown (Sr., WR/DB), Wes Eaton (Sr., WR/LB), Phadarian Harper (Sr., WR/DB), Josh Gibbs (Sr., WR/DB), Austin Sinclair (Sr., WR/DB), Jonathan Rucker (Sr., OL/DL), Matthew Wright (Sr., OL/DL), Jordan Hagar (Sr., OL/DL), Kody Kent (Sr., OL/DL), Chris Pegues (Sr., OL/DL), Bryan Chumley (So., RB)
The Word: While Sabine only managed three wins in 2009, the Cardinals have actually improved their win total each of the last three years (0-10 in 2006, 1-9 in 2007, 2-8 in 2008, and 3-7 in 2009). And, the three wins are the most since 2002. Still, it has been 25 years since the Cardinals have been to the playoffs and Sabine has never won a playoff game. However, it appears Coach Jerry Baker has Sabine going in the right direction. If the improvement is to continue the Cardinals will have to upgrade an offense that averaged only 15 points a game last season. Sophomore Bryan Chumley is the leading rusher for the Cardinals. Meanwhile, seniors Shane Lewis, Caleb Moyers, Kendrick Chumley, Zach Brown and Wes Eaton will all be asked to contribute as play makers in the Sabine offense. On the offensive line, Jonathan Rucker, Matthew Wright, Jordan Hagar, Kody Kent and Chris Pegues will try to pave the way for the Cardinals. The defense returns 6 starters and will be led by linebackers Tevin Alexander (65 tackles) and Wes Eaton. If the upward trend continues for the Cardinals, expect four wins in 2010.
Enrollment: 421 (1)
2009 Record: 6-5 3A Div. 2 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Andy Evans
The Players: B.J. Allen (Sr., RB/LB), Brandon Woodard (Sr., RB/LB), Desmond Fite (Sr., WR/DB), Carl Watkins (Sr., RB/DB), Neil Harkless (Sr., WR/DB), Kendall Bell (Sr., WR/DB), Phoenix Malone (Sr., WR/FS), Cullen Stone (Sr., TE/DE), Hunter Liles (Sr., OL/LB), David Nelson (Sr., OL/DL), Jaylen Overstreet (Jr., QB/LB), Justin Farrell (Jr., OL), LaDerron Johnson (Jr., DE)

2A Disvision II, District 8 Preview
LINDEN-KILDARE TIGERS
Enrollment: 261 (2)
2009 Record: 8-5 2A D2 Regional Semifinalist
The Coach: Jerry Bennett
The Players: Kenneth Harrison (Sr., QB), Xavious Allen (Sr., WR/LB), Cody Belyeu (Sr., WR/LB), Quan Warren (Sr., WR/DB), Eduardo Castrita (Sr., OL/DL), Daquan Bell (Sr., OL/DL), Garrett Countryman (Sr., OL/DL), Kedrick Craver (Sr., WR/S), Sanwon Bennett (Sr., RB/DL), Carranza Easter (Sr., RB/LB), Rashoderick Linwood (Jr., WR/DB)
The Word: Veteran coach Jerry Bennett has the Tigers going in the right direction. L-K’s eight wins were the most since 2003. The Tigers improved as the season progressed. After dropping their first two games, L-K won eight out of their next ten games before losing to Newton in the third round of the playoffs. Even better news for the Tigers is that they will return 18 lettermen in 2010 including several key starters. One of those key starters is quarterback Kenneth Harrison. The 5’11” Harrison passed for better than 1300 yards and collected nearly 1000 yards rushing in 2009. Harrison should have plenty of targets to throw to in Xavious Allen, Quan Warren and Rashoderick Linwood. Allen has descent size at 6’1” and 205 pounds. Meanwhile, junior Linwood may be the most versatile athlete on the team. As just a sophomore, Linwood rushed for more than 700 yards, totaled more than 300 yards receiving, intercepted three passes, recovered five fumbles and led the Tigers in scoring. Expect the multi-talented Linwood to play an even bigger role for L-K in 2010. The offensive line should be in good shape as well with the return of Eduardo Castrita and Daquan Bell. Castrita (6’2” 270) and Bell (5’11” 285) will give the Tigers some good size up front. On the defensive side of the ball, leading tackler Cody Belyeu returns to head up the linebacking corps. He will be joined at linebacker by fellow seniors Carranza Easter and Xavious Allen. Allen tallied four interceptions last season. Coach Bennett has to feel good about his secondary, which will feature speedster Quan Warren at cornerback and Linwood at safety. Warren is a ball hawk who recovered three fumbles and intercepted three passes last season. The defensive line should be led by seniors Sanwon Bennett and Garrett Countryman. Expect Castrita to see time on the defensive line as well. Expectations are high for the Tigers in 2010 after advancing to the regional semifinals for the first time since 1997. With so much talent returning and a veteran coach at the helm, L-K appears primed to make a deep run in the playoffs. They should be considered one of the favorites in region 2.
HUGHES SPRINGS MUSTANGS
Enrollment: 291 (1)
2009 Record: 4-5
The Coach: Chris Edwards
The Players: Brent Giddens (Sr., FB/LB), Anthony Hatten (Sr., WR/FS), Shaquille Ransom (Sr., RB/DB), Jantzen Foster (Sr., G/LB), Garrett Nelson (Sr., OL), Shyne Bright (Sr., T), Demarcus Hopkins (Sr., TE/DE), Kody Young (Sr., DT), Ty Brown (Sr., DE), Davuntae Hatten (Jr., QB), Cody Murphy (Jr., RB/LB), Ryan Russell (Jr., T)
The Word: The Mustangs’ four wins in 2009 were the fewest by a Hughes Springs team since 1996. But, the Mustangs have reason to be optimistic about 2010 with 11 starters returning and some help from a junior varsity squad that went 7-2 on the season. Coach Chris Edwards will welcome back most of his skill position players to operate the Mustangs’ newly installed “Slot T” offense. Quarterback Davuntae Hatten rushed for 658 yards and passed for 450 yards as a sophomore, and figures to be even better in his second year at the helm. Hatten will be joined in the offensive backfield by a trio of talented runningbacks. Brent Giddens, Cody Murphy, and Shaquille Ransom combined to rush for more than 2300 yards in 2009. Fullback Giddens rushed for 1008 yards as a junior and is the catalyst for the Mustangs’ run-oriented offense. Meanwhile, halfback Cody Murphy ran for 642 yards as a sophomore and figures to be an even bigger part of the offense in 2010. Jantzen Foster, Ryan Russell, Garrett Nelson, Shyne Bright, and Dustin Campbell will form the offensive line for Coach Edwards. Seniors Bubba Jones and Demarcus Hopkins will man the tight end positions. After an up-and-down season in 2009, the Mustangs will look to be more consistent on the defensive side of the ball this season. Murphy, Giddens and Foster will form the linebacking unit. Giddens tallied 96 tackles a season ago. Cade Avant and Kody Young will solidify the interior of the defensive line, while Hopkins and Ty Brown will man the defensive end positions. Hopkins used his speed to rack up six sacks in 2009. Senior Michael Phillips will join Ransom at the cornerback positions, while Hatten and Nick Mcguire will form a solid safety tandem. With a year of experience running the new offense and some solid skill players returning, Hughes Springs has a chance to compete for a playoff spot in their new district.
HARLETON WILDCATS
Enrollment: 215 (6)
2009 Record: 7-4 2A Div. 2 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Dennis Alexander
The Players: Billy Smith (Sr., QB/S), Tyler Lyons (Sr., OL/DL), Travis Nichols (Sr., OL/DL), Gauge Volmer (Sr., OL/DL), Levi Johnson (Jr., TE/DE), Jabe Martin (Jr., WR)
The Word: The Wildcats are 63-20 since Dennis Alexander took over the reins in 2002 and have made the playoffs each of the last seven years. Averaging eight wins a season is all the more impressive when you consider Harleton has consistently been the smallest school in their district. Harleton’s defense was once again rock solid in 2009, allowing only 12 points a contest. But, the offense had trouble scoring points at times. The Wildcats lost many of their skill position players to graduation, and will need to find new play makers. One such play maker may be senior Billy Smith, who could take over the quarterback role for the Wildcats. Smith may find a couple good receiving targets in junior tight end Levi Johnson and junior receiver Jabe Martin. Senior center Tyler Lyons will be joined by Travis Nichols and Gauge Volmer to form the offensive line. Lyons, Nichols and Volmer will also likely start on the defensive line along with Johnson at defensive end. Smith will lead the secondary from his safety position. The Wildcats appear to have several holes to fill due to graduation. But, don’t count Harleton out of the playoff hunt. D.A. has turned the Wildcats into a consistent winning program.
ELYSIAN FIELDS YELLOWJACKETS
Enrollment: 251.5 (3)
2009 Record: 5-5
The Coach: Vacant
The Players: Alex Macklin (Sr., WR/DB), Stanley Roquemore (Sr., WR/DE), Ty Lawless (Sr., OL/DL), Luis Deleon (Sr., OL/DL), Jeremy Wiggington (Sr., OL/DL), William Hicks (Sr., OL/DL), Matt McMillion (Sr., OL/DL), Isaiah Golden (So., TE/DE), Christian Smith (So., WR/DB)
The Word: The Yellowjackets are 11-8 since going to the state finals in 2007. After winning their first three contests in 2009, Elysian Fields dropped five of their next six games and fell out of playoff contention. One bright spot for the Yellowjackets in 2009, was the emergence of tight end and defensive end Isaiah Golden. Golden was the district offensive newcomer of the year as a freshman. Golden has the size and ability to dominate at the 2A level. Joining Golden on offense should be Christian Smith who seems primed to take over at the quarterback position. Alex Macklin will provide a solid option at receiver. And, Stanley Roquemore will likely shoulder most of the running duties. Ty Lawless, Jeremy Wiggington, Tyler Hicks, and Matt McMillion all figure to contribute on the offensive line which should feature some good size and depth. The Yellowjackets surrendered nearly 21 points a game in 2009 and will need to improve on that number if Elysian Fields wants to increase its win total from a year ago. Stanley Roquemore will line up at linebacker and Isaiah Golden will likely line up at the defensive end spot for the Yellowjackets. And, Macklin and Smith will provide the defensive secondary with much needed play makers. Making the playoffs is not out of the question for the Yellowjackets, but with only three playoff spots available, it won’t be easy.
ORE CITY REBELS
Enrollment: 228 (5)
2009 Record: 4-6
The Coach: Bobby Chadwick
The Players: Jonathan Harris (Sr., FB/LB), Alan Phillips (Sr., WR/CB), Raul Esquivel (Sr., OL/DL), Jordan Boyd (Sr., OL/DL), Dillon Ivory (Sr., OL/DL), Jaret Bozeman (Sr., FB/DL), Joey Henderson (Jr., RB/LB), Jonathan Ramsey (Jr., RB/DB), Dalton Hildreth (Jr., QB/DB), Kendrick Gilstrap (Jr., RB/LB)
The Word: The Rebels began the year going 4-1 in nondistrict, but lost all 5 district games and wound up 4-6. Ore City returns some key components on both sides of the ball in 2010, so improvement is possible. Fifteen lettermen return for the Rebels. Runningback Joey Henderson topped 1000 yards as a sophomore and could be even more dangerous in his junior season. But, Henderson is not alone. Seniors Jaret Bozeman, Jonathan Ramsey, and Jonathan Harris could all see significant carries for the Rebels. All-district offensive lineman Dillon Ivory is huge at 6’3” and 305 pounds. Ivory will be joined up front by Raul Esquivel as they try to pave the way for the Rebels’ offense. Defensively, the Rebels will be led by cornerback Alan Phillips who led the team in interceptions a year ago. Jonathan Harris and Kendrick Gilstrap will head up the linebacking unit along with Henderson. Jaret Bozeman and Jordan Boyd will likely start up front for the Rebels. Coach Bobby Chadwick is 9-11 in two years at Ore City. Chadwick’s nine wins in two years is one more than the total Ore City had in the five years prior to his arrival.
WASKOM WILDCATS
Enrollment: 235 (4)
2009 Record: 0-10
The Coach: Whitney Keeling
The Players: Aaron Jackson (Sr., WR/DB), Sam Foley (Sr., RB/LB), Jacolby Johnson (Sr., RB/DL), Daniel Hicks (Sr., OL/LB), Shelton Booth (Jr., QB/DB), Kylan Jackson (Jr., RB/LB), Wayne Lankford (Jr., TE/LB), Justin Gossett (Jr., RB/DB), Jason Spurlin (Jr., OL/DL)
The Word: The Wildcats suffered through an 0-10 season in 2009 and have won only 3 games the last three seasons. Coach Brian Lowe is gone after only one season as head coach and has been replaced by former Pleasant Grove assistant coach, Whitney Keeling. Coach Keeling’s first order of business will be to inject some life into a Wildcat offense that scored only 66 points all season. That may be a tough task given the fact that Waskom loses starting quarterback Zack Gillard and starting running back Wade Walter to graduation. Junior Shelton Booth may get the first shot at replacing Gillard under center. Whoever mans the quarterback position for the Wildcats will be smart to look for wide receiver Aaron Jackson. Jackson has good size and speed and, as a state qualifier in the high jump, he has the ability to go up and get the ball when it is thrown his direction. Kylan Jackson and Jacolby Johnson should see the bulk of the carries for the Wildcats. Expect Jason Spurlin (6’0” 225) to contribute on both the offensive and defensive lines. Those competing for playing time at the linebacker positions should be Sam Foley, Daniel Hicks, Kylan Jackson, Jacolby Johnson and Wayne Lankford. Defensive backs should include A. Jackson, who had six interceptions a year ago, and junior Justin Gossett. Waskom has a tough task ahead of them in 2010 moving up from 1A to 2A. Coach Keeling will have to hit the ground running if the Wildcats are to show improvement.
