2A-1 District 8

DAINGERFIELD TIGERS
Enrollment: 407 (2)
2010 Record: 14-1; 2A Div. 1 State Champions
The Coach: Aric Sardinea
The Players: Jesse Hansen (Sr., OL), Jeremy Godbolt (Sr., WR/DB), Darrin Terry (Sr., WR/DB), John Smith (Sr., OL/DL), Devin Smith (Sr., LB), Desmond Heath (Sr. LB), Dejon Mims (Sr., DB), Kagen Tilley (Sr. LB), Alex Allen (Sr., QB), Edwin Mims (Jr., QB), Jacoby Simpson (Jr., OL/DL), Ruben Mims (Jr., DB), Cordarius Anderson (So., RB)
The Word: With 26 seconds remaining in the state title game, Tyler Boyd hit Keyarris Garrett with a 69 yard touchdown strike to propel the Tigers to an incredible 33-27 victory over Cameron Yoe. The win marked Daingerfield’s third straight state championship and capped an amazing three year run during which the Tigers amassed a 44-3 record. Now, Daingerfield prepares to retool once more. Coach Barry Bowman, the architect of three straight state titles, has moved on to 3A Paris. Also gone are a bus load of elite players. The Tigers will have to replace super-talented players: Steve Edmond (Texas), Shayvion Hatten (Texas A&M), Donald Bryant (Baylor), Keyarris Garrett (Tulsa), Lamarse Lafayette (Air Force), Tyler Boyd (SFA), and David Mims (Texas State). Replacing that kind of talent is hard for a 5A program, much less a 2A program, so there is plenty of work to be done. But, don’t feel sorry for the Tigers. In Daingerfield, where they have won 6 state championships, the next super-star is always right around the corner. This fall the Tigers will welcome back 10 starters, 5 on each side of the ball. On offense, senior wide receivers Jeremy Godbolt and Darrin Terry will spearhead Daingerfield’s high-octane spread offense. Edwin Mims, who excelled as a receiver last year, coule move to quarterback or to runningback this year. Mims is the fastest athlete on the team and quite possibly one of the fastest in the region. Senior Alex Allen gives Daingerfield another option at quarterback. The offensive line will be anchored by Jesse Hanson, a three year starter, and John Smith, who started at both center and tackle a year ago. Joining Hanson and Smith up front should be juniors Jacoby Simpson and Fernando Rodriguez, each of whom started a hand full of games last year. The one constant over the last three years for the Tigers has been the defense. Daingerfield has boasted one of the best defenses in 2A and produced countless all-state players and three straight defensive players of the year. The 2011 version of the Tigers should once again feature a solid defense with strong linebacker play. Devin Smith and Desmond Heath will lead the linebackers. Smith finished the season with 147 tackles, 32 tfls, and 9 sacks. Heath was the defensive newcomer of the year despite starting only 8 games after injuries forced him into the lineup. Senior Kagen Tilley should occupy the other linebacking spot. Meanwhile, Dejon Mims and Ruben Mims each played key roles in Daingerfield’s playoff run a year ago and look to solidify a scrappy Tiger secondary. Daingerfield has some big shoes to fill, including Quarterback and Middle Linebacker. But, 10 returning starters and help from an 8-1 JV team have the Tigers eyeing another district title and yet another deep playoff run. Daingerfield named Aric Sardinea, former offensive coordinator at Rowlett, as the new athletic director and head football coach to replace Coach Bowman. Sardinea is a young, energetic coach getting his first chance at a head position. He gets that opportunity at one of the elite 2A programs in the state.

NEW BOSTON LIONS
Enrollment: 410 (1)
2010 Record: 11-3; 2A Div. 1 Quarterfinalist
The Coach: Rick Barker
The Players: Shakeem Jefferson (Sr., RB), Myles Hines (Sr., LB), Garrett Burnett (Sr., TE), LJ Carroll (Sr., OL/DL), Brandon Contoleon (Sr., OL), Ty Jones (Sr., LB), Haydon Raney (Sr., DL), Scott Brooks (Sr., WR), Damien Haskins (Jr., RB), Trey Jackson (Jr., LB), Jerical Hardman (Jr., DL), Tyjae Clark (Jr., DL), Wesley Holmes (So., OL)
The Word: Rick Barker’s Lions went 11-3 in 2010 and made it all the way to the quarterfinals before being knocked out of the playoffs by district rival and eventual state champion Daingerfield. Of the 3 losses suffered by the Lions in 2010, 2 came at the hands of the eventual state champs and the other was an overtime loss to 3A Spring Hill. More wins appear to be in the cards with the return of 16 starters, including all-state running back Shakeem Jefferson. Jefferson ran for more than 2,400 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2010. Jefferson’s speed is electrifying and puts him in elite company at the 2A level. Although Jefferson is without question the most exciting player returning for the Lions, he is not alone. New Boston returns 7 other all-district performers from a year ago. Three of those all-district players are offensive linemen who figure to open holes for Jefferson and the Lion running game. LJ Carroll, Wesley Holmes and Brandon Contoleon will help form one of the more talented offensive lines in all of 2A. Holmes (6’1” 270 lbs.) is only a sophomore and could develop into one of the better linemen in East Texas over the next three years. Also returning is all-district tight end Garrett Burnett and running back Damien Haskins. The most pressing question for Coach Barker’s offense is who will replace the multi-talented Darrion Wade at quarterback for the Lions. There are no such pressing questions for the Lions on defense, however. With the return of 9 starters on the defensive side of the ball, New Boston’s 3-4 defense figures to be as stingy as any defensive unit in the region. Linebackers Myles Hines, Ty Jones and Trey Jackson all run well and have a nose for the football. They will be joined by senior nose guard Haydon Raney, two-way standout Carroll and juniors Jerical Hardeman and Tyjae Clark to form a solid front seven. Jefferson will once again pull double duty as he roams the defensive backfield from his strong safety position. He will be joined by fellow senior safety Drew Denton. The Lions have a good shot to compete for a district title and much more in 2011. But, beating the 3 time defending state champions in Daingerfield will be no easy task. The district showdown between the Lions and Tigers on October 28th will be highly anticipated by fans, players and experts throughout the state.

REDWATER DRAGONS
Enrollment: 339 (5)
2010 Record: 5-5; 2A Div. 1 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Jeff Stine
The Players: Cole Yeldell (Sr., QB/DB), Dorian Hankins (Sr., HB/DB), Dewey Fleming (Sr., FB/LB), Dakota Threlkeld (Sr., OL/LB), Skylar Pettit (Sr. WR/DB), Josh Trumble (Sr., FB/LB), Kade Lumpkin (Sr., OL/DL), Bryan Redix (Sr. OL/DL), Matt Thomas (Sr. OL/DL), (Jared Bristow (Jr., FB/LB), Michael Perry (Jr., TE/DL), Dalton McCarty (Jr., QB/LB), Hunter Cox (Jr., RB), Michael Cochran (So., DB),
The Word: The Dragons pounded their way to a playoff berth in 2010 behind a powerful running attack. The good news for Redwater fans is that the Dragons return several key pieces of the offense that averaged more than 30 points per game last season. Quarterback Cole Yeldell is back to orchestrate the Dragons’ flexbone offense after putting in an all-district performance a year ago. Also back are Running backs Dorian Hankins and Hunter Cox. The speedy Hankins was selected second team all-district and Cox was the offensive newcomer of the year in 2010. Joining them in the backfield will be battering ram, Dewey Fleming. The 240 pound fullback is a punishing runner that fuels the Dragons’ ground attack. Seniors Dakota Threlkeld, Kade Lumpkin, Matt Thomas and Bryan Redix should all contribute along the offensive line for Redwater. Lumpkin was a second team all-district player in 2010. Linebackers Jared Bristow and Josh Trumble will lead the Dragon defense. Both were first team all-district performers a year ago. At 225 pounds, Trumble is a force for the Dragons on defense. Also returning on the defensive side of the ball are safeties Skylar Pettit and Michael Cochran. Yeldell will likely play both sides of the ball and hold down one of the cornerback positions. Coach Stine’s club fell just short of capturing Redwater’s first ever playoff win, falling to Melissa 40-36 in the bi-district round last season. There is every reason for Dragon fans to be optimistic about the 2011 season. Redwater should make the playoffs and could prove a tough out in the first round.

PRAIRILAND PATRIOTS
Enrollment: 360 (3)
2010 Record: 4-6
The Coach: Glen Schuelke
The Players: Brian Jones (Sr., DL), Taren Sartor (Sr., OL), Josh Esch (Sr., RB), Dustin Martin (Sr., WR/DB), Tyler Patterson (QB)
The Word: Glen Schuelke took over a struggling Prairiland program in 1999, and after going 1-9 in his first season, has led the Patriots to unprecedented success, going 74-33-1 from 2000-2009. 2010 was not as kind to the Schuelke and the Partriots, who went 4-6, while moving to a tougher district and dealing with the departure of a strong class of seniors. The decline was felt on both sides of the ball as the offense scored 8 fewer points per game, while the defense gave up nearly 9 additional points per contest. Things will not get any easier for the Patriots as district foes Daingerfield, New Boston and Redwater all figure to be formidable opponents in 2011. There are some bright spots for the Patriots however, including running back and strong safety Josh Esch. Esch, who ran for nearly 1,400 yards, was a first team all-district selection on offense in a district full of great running backs. Esch was also a second team all-district selection on the defensive side of the ball for the Patriots. Defensive lineman Brian Jones is a two-time all-district performer who figures to lead the defense. And, senior offensive lineman Taren Sartor is one of the better linemen in the district and will be a key cog in the Patriots Wing-T offense. Senior Dustin Martin will also be a key contributor on offense and defense, playing receiver and defensive back. Prairiland will likely challenge Redwater and Hooks for the district’s final playoff spot.

HOOKS HORNETS
Enrollment: 347 (4)
2010 Record: 4-6
The Coach: Jim Rice
The Players: Kendrick Henderson (Sr., WR/DB), Damarcus Dickerson (Sr., WR/DB), Jerod Nellums (Sr., OL/DL), Justin Howe (Sr., WR/LB), Blake Young (Sr., OL/LB), Gerod Hubbard (Sr., OL/DL), Justin Vanhoose (Sr., OL/DL), Demetris Burchette (Jr., RB/LB), Aaron Doddy (Jr., QB/DB), Cedrick Johnson (Jr., WR/DB), Trey Powell (Jr., DB), Jacoby Nelloms (Jr., OL/DL)
The Word: Coach Rice is 31-42 in seven seasons at Hooks, including a 4-6 mark in 2010. In fairness it should be noted that 5 of the 6 losses in 2010 came against playoff teams with a combined record of 49-14. The bad news is the Hornets lost those 5 games by an average score of 48-12. The first order of business for Coach Rice has to be improving a defense that gave up almost 32 points per game last season. The task of leading the defense will likely fall to a talented pair of seniors, defensive back Kendrick Henderson and linebacker Blake Young. Henderson is a two-time all-district defensive player who is also a standout at wide receiver and as a kick returner. Young was a second team all-district linebacker in Hooks’ 3-4 defense. Defensive end Jerod Nellums will also be a big part of the Hornet defense, as will defensive back Damarcus Dickerson. Dickerson has good speed and quickness. On offense, Quarterback Aaron Doddy returns to lead the Hornets. Although just a junior, Doddy already has a lot of experience as a starter. Another junior, Demetris Burchette, will be the feature back in Hooks’ I-back offense. Burchette has good size and speed and, like Doddy, has played varsity football since his freshman year. Henderson, Dickerson and Justin Howe should all spend time at wide receiver for the Hornets, giving Doddy several targets to choose from. Hooks begins the season facing a pair of playoff teams from a year ago in Linden-Kildare and Hughes Springs. These early tests could help prepare the Hornets for a tough district.

QUEEN CITY BULLDOGS
Enrollment: 314 (6)
2010 Record: 1-9
The Coach: Buddy Ray
The Players: Hunter Wilcher (Sr., QB/DB), Chris Martin (Sr., WR/LB), Denver Davis (Sr., WR/DB), Cody Norton (Sr., WR/DB), Tim Lovely (Sr., TE/OLB), Carlos Tipton (Sr., WR/DB), Sadat Banks (Sr., RB/DB), Austin Wasson (Sr., WB/OLB), Wesley Bowman (Sr., TE, OLB), Brandon Berry (Sr., OL/LB), Lucas Owens (Sr., TE/DE), Chevy Smith (Sr., OL/DL), Brad Dodson (Sr., OL/DL), Kadarion Robinson (Jr., TE/DE)
The Word: The Bulldogs have not made the playoffs since 2001 and have struggled mightily over the last nine years, compiling a 20-69 record during that stretch. Queen City has changed head coaches 6 times during those nine years, including 4 times in the last 4 years. Buddy Ray, a long-time coach in East Texas, with stops at New Boston, Big Sandy, Whitehouse and Dekalb took over a year ago and led a young Bulldog team to a 1-9 record in 2010. Improvement may be on the way in Ray’s second season at the helm. The Bulldogs will welcome back a strong group of seniors including Quarterback Hunter Wilcher. Wilcher is a multi-sport athlete for the Bulldogs who is equally adept at running and passing. Running back Sadat Banks also returns and should add a home run threat to the Bulldog offense. Wide receivers Chris Martin, Denver Davis, Carlos Tipton and Cody Norton will provide targets for Wilcher in the passing game. The Bulldogs suffered from a lack of size on the offensive line a year ago. So, the return of senior linemen Chevy Smith (250 lbs.) and Brad Dodson (265 lbs.) is a big plus for Coach Ray’s team. On defense, linebacker Austin Wasson and defensive end Lucas Owens should be two strong contributors for the Bulldogs. Junior Kadarion Robinson has the size and ability to play several positions on defense, but will most likely be asked to cause havoc from the defensive end position. More than anything, Queen City needs stability at the head coaching position. Ray is a good coach with a lot of experience. Given time, Coach Ray should be able to get the Bulldogs pointed in the right direction. But, as the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day.”

2A-1 District 9

TATUM EAGLES
Enrollment: 421 (1)
2010 Record: 12-1; 2A Div. 1 Quarterfinalist
The Coach: Andy Evans
The Players: Jaylen Overstreet (Jr., QB/LB), Ladarrion Johnson (Sr., FB/DE), Nathan Pickett (Sr., WR/LB), Vance Clark (Sr., RB/LB), Daven Reese (Sr., TE/DE), LaRance Hale (Sr., OL/DL), Ricky Hyde (Sr., OL), Davian Hopkins (Sr., FB/DT), Caleb Mobley (Sr., OL/DL), Jordan Noel (Sr., WR/DB), Kiano Lucas (Jr., LB), Darrian Brooks (Jr., WR/LB), Darrius Whitting (Jr., OL/DL)
The Word: 2010 saw the Eagles rack up a district title, a 12-1 record, and a trip to the state quarterfinals before losing to eventual state finalist Cameron Yoe. Coach Andy Evans, who is 76-18 with 2 state titles with Tatum, will have to find a way to replace big time players: BJ Allen (Baylor), Cullen Stone (ACU), Desmond Fite (SHSU), and Brandon Woodard (KC) who will be playing on Saturdays this fall. While finding players to fill those big shoes may be a concern, pure numbers will not be an issue for the Eagles who return 20 lettermen in 2011 and fielded 4 teams at the high school level in 2010. Those types of numbers are almost unheard of at the 2A level. Quarterback Jaylen Overstreet returns to operate Tatum’s multiple formation offense. The athletic Overstreet (6’2” 205 lbs) is garnering lots of attention from college scouts who would like him to play everything from Quarterback to Wide Receiver to Safety. In the running game, Tatum will have to find a way to replace the huge amount of production provided by Woodard and Allen over the last 2 seasons. Shaq Johnson may get the first opportunity to be the featured running back for the Eagles. At 5’6” and 155 pounds, Johnson is not big, but he possesses the type of speed (4.4 - 40) that Tatum is well known for. Bailey Wright will also see touches in the Eagles’ offense. Overstreet’s two favorite targets in the passing game figure to be wide receiver Nate Pickett and tight end Daven Reese. Both have good size and speed, and Reese was a first team all-district performer in 2010. The offensive line will have plenty of size as well. Larance Hale will line up at center for the Eagles and checks in at 6’3” and 285 pounds. Joining Hale up front should be Ricky Hyde (295 lbs.), Darrius Whitting (270 lbs.), Eric Davis (260 lbs.) and Caleb Mobley (255 lbs.). Defensively, the Eagles return only 2 starters, but they are a couple of good ones. Defensive end Ladarrion Johnson was the district defensive newcomer of the year in 2010. And, Davian Hopkins, who was a second team all-district selection as a defensive tackle a year ago and is expected to move to linebacker this season. Joining Johnson on the defensive line should be Hale, Reese and Mobley. Meanwhile, Kiano Lucas, who played a lot as a sophomore, will join Hopkins at linebacker. The real question mark for the Eagles is who will play in the secondary. Jordan Noel and Pat Sessions will likely get an opportunity to start at the cornerback positions, and Overstreet could see some time at safety. There is no question that Tatum will be one of the favorites in the very tough 2A Region III. A trip to the state finals is not a stretch for this talented team.

JEFFERSON BULLDOGS
Enrollment: 349 (4)
2010 Record: 5-6; 2A Div. 1 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Jerry Bennett
The Players: Bailey Fratangelo (Sr., QB), Dennis Wilson (Sr., DL), Turahn Mitchell (Sr., RB/LB), Zack Powell (Sr., OL/DL), Luke Hall (Sr., OL/DL), Hunter Higgins (Sr., TE/DE), Eric Obregon (Sr., TE/DE), Sadarius Figures (Jr., RB/LB/DL), Ky’erik Warren (Jr., WR/DB), Josh Eppler (Jr., RB/LB), Deion Williams (Jr., RB/DB), Devante Singleton (Jr., TE/DE), Laine House (Jr., K/P)
The Word: It’s Back to the Future for the Jefferson Bulldogs. After 10 years away, Jerry Bennett returns to Jefferson, where he coached for 19 years, where he won a state championship in 1986, and where the field bears his name. He takes over a team that consistently produces college football players and routinely makes the playoffs. However, the Bulldogs haven’t advanced more than a couple rounds deep in the playoffs since 2003. Bulldog fans are hoping that Bennett can change that. Coach Bennett will have some important pieces to work with, including 18 returning lettermen and 11 returning starters (5 on offense and 6 on defense). Quarterback Bailey Fratangelo returns to run the Bulldog offense after starting every game in 2010. Junior running back Deion Williams, who was the district newcomer of the year after running for close to 900 yards as a sophomore, also returns. The offensive line will be anchored by senior Zack Powell with help from Luke Hall. Meanwhile, outside linebacker Sadarius Figures and defensive lineman Dennis Wilson, both all-district players from a year ago, will headline Jefferson’s 50 defense. Joining Figures and Wilson on defense will be linebacker Turahn Mitchell, one of the more versatile players in the district, and defensive back Ky’erik Warren. Linebacker Josh Eppler will also play an important role for the Bulldogs. Special teams should be in good shape with kicker/punter Laine House handling most of the kicking duties. The return of Coach Bennett has Bulldog fans excited about a possible playoff run, but getting deep into the playoffs in Region III is never an easy task.

WHITE OAK ROUGHNECKS
Enrollment: 408 (2)
2010 Record: 5-6; 2A Div. 1 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Open
The Players: Matt Terrell (Sr., RB/LB), Logan Frazier (Sr., OL/DL), Isaac Avery (Sr., TE/DE), Ian Story (SR., QB/DB), Josh Presson (Sr., RB/LB), Austin Ferguson (Sr., OL/LB), Devon Herndon (Sr., TE/LB), Hayden Hughes (Sr., LB), Caleb Carr (Sr., S), Jeffrey Davis (Jr., FB/DL), Darion Barr (Jr., RB/DB), Hunter Owens (Jr., RB)
The Word: Although the Roughnecks won 7 games on the field, White Oak finished the season with a 5-6 official record, (the first 2 games of the season were forfeited due to an ineligible player having played in those games). The Roughnecks competed for a district title, but lost a hard fought game to district foe Tatum in the final game of the regular season. Then, White Oak was unceremoniously bounced in the first round of the playoffs in a 69-35 thrashing at the hands of the Newton Eagles. The Roughnecks have had a pretty solid run the last 3 years after dropping down to the 2A ranks in 2008, but 2011 may be a bit of a rebuilding year for the Necks. On offense, White Oak will have to find replacements at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and much of the offensive line. Hunter Owens, Caleb Carr and Jeffrey Davis figure to share carriers in White Oak’s run-oriented offense. Meanwhile, 6’3” 215 pound tight end, Isaac Avery, will provide a big target when the Necks decide to throw the football. Senior Ian Story may get the first opportunity to operate the Roughneck offense from under center. Logan Frazier will be the leader of the offensive line after garnering second team all-district honors as a junior. On defense, Avery and Davis should hold down a couple spots on the defensive line, while Matt Terrell will lead the linebacking corps with help from Hayden Hughes and Josh Presson. Caleb Carr returns at safety for the Necks and looks to solidify what will likely be a young secondary. White Oak has some holes to fill on both sides of the football, but there is still enough ammunition in the barrel to keep the Necks competing for a playoff spot.

NEW DIANA EAGLES
Enrollment: 316 (6)
2010 Record: 5-5
The Coach: Roger Adams
The Players: Ryan Brightwell (Sr., WR), Dalton Hawkins (Sr., DL), Antonio Barron (Sr., RB/LB), Dustin Whitley (Sr., OL/LB), Trent Davis (Jr., OL/DL), Marco Newsome (Jr., RB/DL), Caleb Garrett (Jr., LB), Edmond Jones (Jr., RB), Brandon Wesley (So., LB)
The Word: The Eagles finished the 2010 season 5-5 and fell just short of a second straight playoff berth. A triple overtime loss to Jefferson in the final district game of the season was the only thing that kept Roger Adams’ Eagles from capturing a playoff spot in a tough district. The Eagles will have to find a way to replace their all-everything running back and defensive back Beau Brewer who graduates after a tremendous senior season. The bulk of the running duties will likely fall to juniors Marco Newsome and Edmond Jones. Newsome is big and strong at 6’1” and 210 pounds, while Jones is more of a scat back. Also in the mix for carries will be sophomore Brandon Wesley. All three should be instrumental in New Diana’s run oriented wing T offense. Senior receiver Ryan Brightwell should provide a solid target when the Eagles decide to go to the air. Meanwhile, the offensive line will be anchored by junior Trent Davis who has good size at 6’2”and 235 pounds. The defense will be led by linebacker Caleb Garrett who was a first team all-district selection as a sophomore. Wesley will join Garrett at linebacker after being named second team all-district as just a freshman. Marco Newsome was a standout on defense as a sophomore and should be one of the more dominant defensive linemen in the district. Newsome will likely be in the discussion as district defensive player of the year, along with players like Tatum’s Ladarrion Johnson and Jefferson’s Sadarius Figures. Newsome will get help on the defensive line from senior Dalton Hawkins who makes up for his lack of size with great intensity and effort. Senior linebacker Dustin Whitley should contribute for the Eagles in his third year on varsity. New Diana competed well in their new district in 2010, but making the playoffs in a district with Tatum, Jefferson and White Oak is no easy task. The Eagles will need to pull off an upset of one of those teams while holding off Harmony and Sabine if they hope to make the playoffs in 2011.

HARMONY EAGLES
Enrollment: 332 (5)
2010 Record: 1-9
The Coach: Tim Russell
The Players: Austin Anderson (Sr., OL/DL), Chase Ferguson (Sr., OL/DL), Travis Laastad (Sr., DL), Wesley Schoon (Sr., QB/DB), Casey Whittemore (Sr., OL/DL), Charlie Moler (Sr., TE/LB), Hayden Means (Sr., OL), Dylan Weatherby (Sr., DL), Justin Miller (Sr., LB), Matt Hosea (Sr., OLB), Lucas Askew (Jr., WR), Daven Murphree (Jr., DB), Alan Peralta (Jr., WR), Aaron Keith (So., RB), Levi Thompson (So., DL)
The Word: Harmony suffered through a 1-9 season in 2010, their worst record in more than 25 years. But, don’t look for the Eagles to stay down long. Coach Russell’s club will welcome back 17 lettermen and 15 starters in 2011. Quarterback Wesley Schoon returns to operate Harmony’s multiple I formation offense after being named to the all-district team as a junior. Sophomore running back Aaron Keith will see plenty of touches after rushing for 380 yards and 3 touchdowns as a freshman. Junior Hayden Rhodes will also tote the rock for the Eagles. At 6’5” and 210 pounds, wide receiver Lucas Askew will provide an impressive target for Schoon. Versatile junior receiver Alan Peralta will join Askew on the outside to form a formidable combination in the Eagle passing game. The offensive line should be a strength for Harmony as they welcome back four starters from a year ago: Hayden Means (6’2” 305 lbs.), Casey Whittemore (6’0” 185 lbs.), Chase Ferguson (6’2” 285 lbs.) and all-district performer Austin Anderson (6’2” 205 lbs.). Sophomore Jonathan Weaver will join this veteran group and provide additional size at 6’2” and 280 pounds. On defense, the Eagles return 8 starters, including all 4 defensive linemen. Defensive linemen Dylan Weatherby, Levi Thompson and Travis Laastad will join Anderson to form a very solid defensive front. Laastad has good size at 6’3” and 235 pounds. Starting inside linebackers Charlie Moler and Justin Miller also return for the Eagles. Junior Reid Rendon will hold down one of the outside linebacker positions, while senior Matt Hosea will operate on the other side for the Eagles. Daven Murphree is the only returning starter in the Eagle secondary. But, if newcomers Brandon Glenn and Tim McCoy can excel in the secondary, the Eagles have the makings of a strong defensive unit. Harmony should be much improved in 2011. If things fall just right, look for the Eagles to press New Diana and even Jefferson and White Oak for wins and a possible playoff spot in the district.

SABINE CARDINALS
Enrollment: 377.5 (3)
2010 Record: 1-9
The Coach: Jerry Baker
The Players: Dylan Howell (Sr., QB/DB), Jacob Smith (Sr., WR/LB), Keegan Moyers (Sr., WR/DB), Isaac Hicks (Sr., RB/LB), Jason Sparcino (Sr., WR/DB), Cody Dodson (Sr., OL/DL), Dylan Cook (Sr., OL/DL), Zack Kent (Sr., OL/DL), Kaleb Wolter (Sr., TE/DB), Bryan Chumley (Jr., RB), Tevin Alexander (Jr., RB/LB), Nico Borrego (Jr., DB), Qwaylen Chumley (So., DB),
The Word: It has been 26 years since the Cardinals have made the playoffs. And after improving their record over the last few years, Jerry Baker’s team managed only 1 win in 2010 and that was over 1A Overton. Running back Bryan Chumley was a bright spot for Harmony leading the Cardinals in rushing for the second straight season. Chumley, just a junior, is a tough runner with a bit of a burst. Senior Isaac Hicks will also see carries in the Cardinals’ offense along with Tevin Alexander. Senior quarterback Dylan Howell will provide another playmaker for Coach Baker as both a runner and a passer. Linemen Cody Dodson, Dylan Cook and Zack Kent will all contribute up front for the Cardinals. Junior Tevin Alexander will lead the defense from his linebacker position, a spot he has held since his freshman year. Sophomore defensive back Qwaylen Chumley was a stand out as a freshman and was named second team all-district. Meanwhile, Hicks will pull double duty and contribute at linebacker for the Cardinals. The Cardinals may be improved in 2011, but picking up more than 2 or 3 wins will be hard considering the schedule Coach Baker’s club faces.

2A-1 District 11

CROCKETT BULLDOGS
Enrollment: 393 (1)
2010 Record: 10-2; 2A Div. 1 Regional Semi-Finalists
The Coach: Paul Parsons
The Players: Dominique Wheeler (Sr., QB/WR/DB), Andjuwan Smith (Sr., QB/RB/LB) C.J. Wheeler (Sr., QB/WR), D’Vaughan Le (Sr., WR/FS), Denell Parker (Sr., WR/RB/DL), J’lynt English (Sr., OL), Kabroderan Handborough (Sr., DB), Demarcus Sherman (Sr., DB), Tevin Collins (Jr., OL), Jaylon Bizor (Jr., OL), Devoderick Gray (Jr., OL), Michael McKnight (Jr., WR/DB),
The Word: In 2009, as a 3A team, Crockett suffered through a 1-9 season. But, a drop down to 2A and a talented group of players had the Bulldogs back on top in 2010. The Bulldogs put together a 10-2 record and captured a district championship along the way. Now, Crockett returns 12 starters and a strong nucleus of talented players from that regional finalist team and appears ready to make a deep run in the playoffs. A quartet of skilled position players headline Coach Parsons’ club on offense. Wide receiver Dominique Wheeler, wide receiver Denell Parker, running back Andjuwan Smith, and quarterback C.J. Wheeler are as talented as any group of offensive players in East Texas. Dominique Wheeler is one of the top recruits in the state. The 6’1” 180 pound wide receiver already holds offers from Auburn, Texas, TCU, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. Wheeler, who spent time at wide receiver, running back and quarterback last season while racking up more than 2400 all purpose yards, should be able to concentrate on just playing wide receiver this season. Running back Andjuwan Smith also spent considerable time at quarterback for the Bulldogs as starting quarterback C.J. Wheeler missed most of the season because of injury. Smith ended up throwing for over 1,000 yards and rushing for another 600 on his way to district MVP honors. The aforementioned C.J. Wheeler returns to the quarterback position in 2011 which will allow Smith to slide back to his natural running back position. C.J. Wheeler passed for more than 1000 yards as a sophomore a couple years ago, so his return is very much welcomed. Wide receiver/running back Denell Parker, who is equally dangerous running and receiving the football, is another legitimate weapon for the Bulldogs. The offensive line will be inexperienced with juniors Brandon Vasquez, Jaylon Bizor, Tevin Collins and Devoderick Gray joining senior J’Lynt English up front. The defense will be led by a pair of seniors in outside linebacker De’Vaughan Le and defensive tackle Zack Stone. Stone is one of the best defensive linemen in the district and could garner an all-state nod this year. Defensive back Michael McKnight impressed last season as a sophomore and will be one of the top defensive playmakers on the team. In addition to running the football, look for Smith to spend considerable time on the defensive side of the ball for the Bulldogs. Crockett should score at will with the skill players they have returning, but the play of the defense could make the difference between advancing a couple rounds deep or playing for a state title.

TEAGUE LIONS
Enrollment: 339 (3)
2010 Record: 7-4; 2A Div. 1 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Josh Finney
The Players: Larry Busby (Sr., RB/DB), Casey Samuels (Sr., WR/DB), Dustin Hunt (Sr., TE/LB), Jarante Carter (Sr., WR/DB), Ryan Lynch (Sr., LB), Cory Reid (Sr., OL/LB), Tanner Perales (Sr., WR/DB), Blake Spears (Sr., OL), Kelton Henderson (Jr., LB), Trae Bell (Jr., TE/DE), Darryl Brooks (Jr., WR/DB), Ty Tunstall (Jr., OL/LB), Jordan Maggard (Jr., DE)
The Word: In 2010, head coach Josh Finney came from 1A Maud, where he compiled a 38-12 record, to take over the head spot for the Teague Lions. Finney led the Lions, who were 5-16 the two prior seasons, to a 7-4 record and a playoff berth. Only a narrow 21-20 loss to Malakoff kept the Lions from finishing second in district behind Crockett. There are plenty of reasons to believe the Lions can duplicate or better their record from a season ago. Teague will welcome back 19 lettermen, including 16 starters, 8 on offense and 8 on defense. Add to that an influx of talent from two subvarsity teams that each went undefeated, and you have the makings of a great football team. Another reason for excitement is the return of running back Larry Busby. Busby broke his leg during the season last year, but should be healthy going into two-a-days. Busby is one of the fastest players in all of 2A and will provide a huge spark for the Lions. Combining with Busby to form an explosive offense should be receivers Casey Samuels and Jarante Carter. The two seniors combined to score 5 receiving touchdowns a year ago. Ty Tunstall and Jordan Maggard should pave the way up front for the Lion offense, along with tight end Trae Bell, who has good size at 6-3 and 210 pounds. The question to be answered on offense for the Lions is who will replace quarterback Jake McClain, who signed to play college football with Southern Arkansas. On defense the Lions look to be in good shape with the return of all-state defensive back Carter, who had 7 interceptions last season. Teague also returns its top tacklers in linebackers Dustin Hunt (94 tackles), Kelton Henderson (70 tackles), and Ryan Lynch (68 tackles). Hunt was a first team all-district performer in 2010. The Lions will also feature a pair of big, strong defensive ends in juniors Maggard and Bell. With a wealth of returning talent, Finney’s club should continue to improve. A second place district finish seems likely for the Lions.

MALAKOFF TIGERS
Enrollment: 304 (5)
2010 Record: 9-2 2A Div. 1 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Jamie Driskell
The Players: Jacob Teague (Sr., QB), Garrett Airheart (Sr., DE), Kash Armstrong (Sr., WR/DB), Matthew Bullock (Sr., OL), Kameron Fletcher (Sr., WR/DB), Dustin Higgs (Sr., OL/DL), Trevor Chambers (Sr., RB/S), Conner Hancock (Sr., OL/DL), Jose Salazar (Sr., OL/LB), Cesar Garcia (Jr., K)
The Word: In 2009, Jamie Driskell took over a Malakoff team that had gone 1-19 in the 2 years prior to his arrival. Coach Driskell has led the Tigers to an overall 17-5 record in the last 2 seasons including a district championship in 2009. However, the Tigers have yet to win a playoff game under Driskell. In fact Malakoff has not won a playoff game since 1999. The Tigers are hoping to change that in 2011. Jacob Teague returns at quarterback for the Tigers after an all-district junior season. Teague, who powered an offense that scored nearly 32 points a game in 2010, was equally dangerous passing and running the football. In his first season of varsity football Teague threw for more than 2000 yards and 23 touchdowns, and rushed for 540 yards and 6 more scores. Wide receivers Kameron Flecther and Kash Armstrong should provide Teague with a versatile pair of targets in the passing game. Running back Trevor Chambers should get the bulk of the carries for the Tigers. Meanwhile, senior center Matthew Bullock will anchor the offensive line while Dustin Higgs, Conner Hancock and Jose Salazar should all contribute up front for Malakoff. The defense has steadily improved in 2 years under Driskell. But, there is still room to improve on a defense that yielded 20 points a game in 2010. Helping lead that quest for improvement will be defensive end Garrett Airheart and defensive back Armstrong. Both were second team all-district players in 2010. Junior Cesar Garcia should handle all of the kicking duties for the Tigers. Malakoff has some holes to fill, but Coach Driskell seems to have brought a winning attitude to the Tigers. An 8 win season and another playoff berth seems about right.

ELKHART ELKS
Enrollment: 363 (2)
2010 Record: 4-6
The Coach: John Adair
The Players: Cam Reeves (Sr., QB/RB/LB), Bryce Fillmore (Sr., RB/K), Tevin White (Sr., RB), John Ballard (Sr., RB), Luke Hollingsworth (Jr., WR), Jacob Cheatham (Jr., WR), Cole Bridges (Jr., WR/DB)
The Word: John Adair, long known as a great baseball coach, took over the head football coaching job at Elkhart in 2010. Coach Adair matched Elkhart’s win total from the previous three seasons, going 4-6 in his first season. Adair installed the spread offense a year ago and it worked to the tune of an 11 point per game improvement from the previous year. But, the Elks will have to find a new trigger man for the offense as quarterback Lane Grant was lost to graduation. The quarterbacking duties may fall to multi-talented athlete Cam Reeves. Reeves has excelled at running back, safety and linebacker in his time at Elkhart, so a move to quarterback is definitely not beyond Reeves’ capabilities. Joining Reeves in the offensive back field will be senior running backs John Ballard and Tevin White. Ballard and White both have the ability to be effective runners for the Elks. Wide receivers Luke Hollingsworth and Jacob Cheatham, both juniors, should contribute heavily in the Elk passing game. Reeves will also lead the defense from his linebacker position. Junior Cole Bridges should contribute in the secondary. The Elks defense surrendered more than 35 points a game in their 5 district games, so improvement on that side of the ball is greatly needed. The Elks may compete for some wins in 2011, but improving much on the 4 wins they had in 2010 will be difficult.

TRINITY TIGERS
Enrollment: 313 (4)
2010 Record: 5-5
The Coach: Chuck Langston
The Players: Kirby Brooks (Sr., TE/LB), Jacoby Mitchell (Sr., WR/DB), Dean Cole (Sr., OL), Stephen Smith (Sr., DL), Cody Case (Sr., OL/DL), Tarlus Davis (Jr., RB/DB), James Lowe (Jr., OL), Steven Alexander (Jr., WR/DB), Holden Currie (Jr., TE/LB), Josue Lopez (Jr., FB/DL), Jordan Ross (Jr., OL/DL), Arron Gibson (Jr., WR/DB), Jesse Reyes (So., DT)
The Word: Coach Langston took over a struggling Trinity football program and seems to have the Tigers going in a positive direction. The Tigers improved from a winless ball club in 2008, to 2 wins in Langston’s first season as head coach in 2009. In 2010, Trinity finished 5-5. Could more improvement be on the way? Senior TE/LB Kirby Brooks should take over a leadership role for the Tigers along with fellow seniors Jacoby Mitchell and Stephen Smith. Both Brooks and Mitchell are key contributors in the Tigers’ passing game as well as on the defensive side of the ball. Meanwhile, Smith figures to be a force from his defensive tackle position. Junior Tarlus Davis should get the first shot as the featured runningback for the Tigers, and will also see time in the defensive secondary and returning kicks. Fellow junior Steven Alexander will also likely see time on offense, defense and special teams for the Tigers as a wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner. Up front, the Tigers will be led by a couple of junior linemen in Jordan Ross and James Lowe. Improving on last year’s 5 wins will be difficult in such a competitive district, but a repeat performance is not out of the question for the Tigers.

TROUP TIGERS
Enrollment: 294 (6)
2010 Record: 1-9
The Coach: Chuck Griffin
The Players: Brock Grigsby (Sr., QB), De’Audre Hawkins (Sr., LB), Anthony Adkins (Sr., LB), James Jiles (Sr., WR), Justin Calley (Sr., DB), Michael Davis (Jr., RB/DE), Bradly Stewart (Jr., LB), Seth Gibson (Jr., WR/DB), Chris Bell (Jr., DB), Wesley Thompson (Jr., DE), D’Zavier Harris (Jr., NG), Kody Welch (Jr., WR), Quintin Green (Jr., WR), Hitachi Lydia (So., DB)
The Word: With only one win on the season, Coach Griffin’s first year at Troup did not go quite as he hoped, but there is plenty of reason for optimism for Tiger fans. Troup was a young team in 2010 and will be young again in 2011. But there is talent on the way for the Tigers and many of them will begin seeing playing time this season. The young players will be bolstered by the leadership of seniors Brock Grigsby, De’Audre Hawkins, Anthony Adkins, James Jiles and Justin Calley. Quarterback Grigsby was the district newcomer of the year and has good size and speed. Grigsby showed the ability to run Troup’s newly installed spread offense. The speedy Jiles should be one of Grigsby’s favorite targets in the passing game. Hawkins and Adkins are bookend outside linebackers who know how to get to the football. Junior Michael Davis should get the bulk of the carries for the Tigers. Davis will be joined by several juniors on offense including receivers Kody Welch, Quintin Green and Seth Gibson. Gibson, who has great speed, should become a big play threat for the Tigers. Bradley Stewart is another junior who should make a key impact on both the offensive line and as a linebacker. Another underclassman to keep an eye on is sophomore defensive back Hatachi Lydia who figures to start right away at one of the cornerback positions. Troup has been on a downward path the last few years, but all signs are pointing to an upward trend in the near future.

2A-2 District 7

OMAHA PAUL PEWITT BRAHMAS
Enrollment: 293 (1)
2010 Record: 10-4; 2A Div. 2 Semifinalist
The Coach: Reggie Kumrow
The Players: Bam Finley, (Sr., FB/LB), Tyrin Evans (Sr., OL), Justin Goforth (Sr., FB/LB), Tanner Wright (Sr., TE/LB), Sedrick Johnson (Sr., RB/DB), Ernest Hill (Sr., DL), James Hawkins (Sr., OL/DL), Denton Evans (Sr., DL), Joe Leeves (Sr., OL), Marcus Lyons (Jr., OL)
The Word: Another year, another trip to the playoffs for the Pewitt Brahmas. In fact, Paul Pewitt has missed the playoffs only 3 times in the last 20 years. In 2010 the Brahmas put together their best season since 2005, going 10-4 and advancing to the state semifinals before ultimately losing to eventual state champion Idalou. Paul Pewitt returns 19 lettermen and 13 starters from last year’s team, so expectations are high in Brahmaland. Perhaps no team in the state runs the slot-T offense better than the Brahmas. For years now, the Brahmas have been bludgeoning opponents with their relentless ground attack. 2011 should be no different with the return of 7 offensive starters, including electrifying runningback Sedrick Johnson. The 5’8” 185 pound Johnson rushed for more than 1500 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2010. Johnson is also an all-state defensive back, having racked up close to 100 tackles and picked off 7 passes last season. Seniors Bam Finley (5’8” 205 lbs.) and Justin Goforth (6’0” 220 lbs.) will split time at the all-important fullback position for the Brahmas. Finley and Goforth combined for better than 1800 yards rushing and 31 touchdowns in 2010. Paving the way up front for the Brahmas will be 350 pound, all-state offensive lineman Tyrin Evans. Joining Evans on the line will be James Hawkins, Joe Leeves and junior Marcus Lyons. Coach Kumrow will have to find a replacement for quarterback Donovan Jarvis who was lost to graduation. The Brahmas return 6 starters on defense, including their top 2 tacklers from last year, linebackers Tanner Wright (162 tackles) and Goforth (144 tackles). Wright (6’2” 215 lbs.) was an honorable mention all-state performer in 2010. Also returning on the defensive side of the ball are defensive tackle Ernest Hill and defensive end Denton Evans. Hawkins will pull double duty and occupy a spot on the defensive line as well. Meanwhile, Johnson will lead the secondary. The Brahmas are loaded with talent and seem primed for another big year. A return trip to the semifinals and a possible rematch with Idalou could be in the cards.

COOPER BULLDOGS
Enrollment: 255 (4)
2010 Record: 9-3; 2A Div. 2 Area Finalist
The Coach: Ronnie Green
The Players: Montrel Roberts (Sr., RB/DB), Travis Oden (Sr., RB/LB), Jalen Roberts (Sr., WR/DB), J.P. Marchland (Sr., QB/LB/K), Colton Williams (Sr., WR/DB), Michael Ballard (Sr., RB/OLB), Justin Warner (Sr., RB/LB), Eli Estep (Sr., OL/DL), Preston Young (Sr., OL/DL), Demetrius Wilkins (Jr., RB/FS), Connor Arthur (Jr., OL), Demarcus Robinson (So., RB/FS)
The Word: The Bulldogs picked up 9 wins in 2010 including their first playoff win since 2005. Despite the departure of quarterback Ty Huie, there is reason to believe Cooper can match or exceed that win total in 2011. Coach Ronnie Green’s club returns 14 starters, 7 on each side of the ball. Leading rusher Montrel Roberts returns to lead Cooper’s wing offense. Roberts was named district co-offensive MVP in 2010 after rushing for more than 1,300 yards. Roberts is not the only one capable of toting the rock for the Bulldogs. Youngsters Demetrius Wilkins and Demarcus Robinson each averaged better than 10 yards per carry for the Bulldogs. Robinson, a freshman in 2010, was named district newcomer of the year and was a standout on both sides of the football. Wide receiver Jalen Roberts returns as well after an all-district performance as a junior. And, fellow senior Colton Williams is another quality receiver for the Bulldogs. Seniors Eli Estep and Preston Young should anchor the offensive line. Defensively the Bulldogs will be led by linebackers Travis Oden, J.P. Marchland and Michael Ballard. Oden, who tallied 107 tackles, was first team all-district in 2010 while Marchland was named to the second team. Wilkins, Robinson and Roberts will headline a speedy secondary for the Bulldogs. With 14 returning starters and help from young players off a junior varsity team that went 9-1 in 2010, Cooper looks like a lock for one of the three playoff spots in the district.

RIVERCREST REBELS
Enrollment: 215 (5)
2010 Record: 6-5; 2A Div. 2 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Allen Cross
The Players: Jacob Wright (Sr., WR/DB), Luke Wright (Sr., WR/OLB), Eddie Waymire (Sr., LB), Shelby Steen (Sr., WR/DE), Jordan Thompson (Sr., OL/DE), Trevor Jesse (Sr., LB), Blake Richardson (Sr., OLB), Jordan Smith (Sr., OL/DL), Doyle Brooks (Jr., RB/DB), Daniel Kasal (Jr., OL), Heath Holt (Jr., OL/DL), Eric Richards (So., QB)
The Word: In his first year at the helm, new coach Allen Cross led Rivercrest to its first winning season since 2005. A 6-5 record and a trip to the playoffs were welcomed by Rebel fans, but the first playoff win in school history has remained elusive. But, the return of 14 starters and a strong senior class have the Rebel faithful believing this might be their year. If the Rebels are going to continue to make strides, improvement to a defense that surrendered nearly 47 points per game in their 5 losses is a must. Improvement is almost certain with 8 starters returning on the defensive side of the ball, including All Red River Valley linebacker Eddie Waymire. The 6’0” 190 pound Waymire averaged nearly 9 tackles per game in 2010 and is the unquestioned leader of the defense. Waymire will get plenty of help from fellow senior linebackers Trevor Jessee, Luke Wright and Blake Richardson. Jacob Wright will lead the secondary from his free safety position after being named all-district and All Red River Valley as a junior. Coach Cross calls Wright, who tallied 3 interceptions a year ago, a “great playmaker.” Juniors Doyle Brooks and K.D. Fields will join Wright in the secondary. Defensive linemen Jordan Thompson, Heath Holt, Jordon Smith and Shelby Steen will form the front line for Rivercrest’s 4-4 defense. Offensively, the Rebels will need to find replacements at quarterback and running back to operate the spread offense. Sophomore Eric Richards looks like the heir apparent at quarterback. Coach Cross calls Richards a “hard worker.” Junior Doyle Brooks (5’10” 170 lbs) will get the first opportunity to be the featured runningback after collecting 3 scores in part-time duty as a sophomore. Jacob Wright should be the go-to guy in the receiving game. Wright caught 26 passes for 536 yards and 7 scores a season ago. Luke Wright, Jacob Harville and Shelby Steen will all see time at receiver as well. The offensive line should be strong with the return of 3 all-district players in Daniel Kasal, Jordon Smith and Jordan Thompson. Heath Holt and Josh Werline should round out the front line for the Rebels. Rivercrest should be in the mix for a playoff spot. The district finale against Cooper is a key matchup for both teams. Cooper won last year’s hard fought contest 48-42.

DEKALB BEARS
Enrollment: 272 (2)
2010 Record: 4-6
The Coach: Ritchie Pinckard
The Players: Tyler Bershears (Sr., WR/LB), Clay Williams (Sr., WR/DB), Brett Hutson (Sr., QB/DB), Tony Walker (Sr., DL), Garrett Bartlett (Sr., OL/DL), Todd Reed (Sr., OL), Chas Montgomery (Sr., LB), Shaquille Wherry (Jr., RB), Jesse Salinas (Jr., FB/LB)
The Word: Coach Ritchie Pinckard took over a football team that was 0-10 in 2009 and managed to pick up 4 wins in his first season at Dekalb. Of Dekalb’s 6 losses in 2010, 5 came against playoff teams. A nucleus of strong players has Bear fans excited about the future. A total of 16 starters return for Coach Pinckard’s club. Quaterback Brett Hutson leads a Bears’ offense that averaged 20.5 points per game last season. Hutson’s two favorite targets in the passing game figure to be seniors Tyler Bershears and Clay Williams. Bershears was a first team all-district selection in 2010, while Williams (1,200 all-purpose yards) was named to the second team. Junior runningback Shaquille Wherry made quite an impact in his sophomore season, being named first team all-district after racking up nearly 1,300 yards rushing. Wherry will get help in the running game from fullback Jessee Salinas. Garrett Bartlett and Todd Reed will be asked to solidify the offensive line. Bartlett is a solid lineman who has been a starter since his sophomore year. Defensively the Bears will be led by a couple of strong defensive linemen in Bartlett and Tony Walker. Walker was a second team all-district selection a year ago. Chas Montgomery will join Salinas and Bershears at linebacker for the Bears. Meanwhile, Hutson and Williams, both second team all-district selections in 2010, will man the secondary. From 2000 to 2008 Dekalb managed an overall record of 67-37 and won 7 playoff games. Bear fans are hoping Coach Pinckard can get the Bears to a similar level in the near future.

PARIS CHISUM MUSTANGS
Enrollment: 259 (3)
2010 Record: 3-7
The Coach: Don Hasley
The Players: Jeremy Helms (Sr., WR/LB), Jonathon Carroll (Sr., WR/RB/DB), Kaylen Miller (Sr. OL/DL), San Marcos Pratt (Sr., OL/DL), Noe Recendiz (Sr. OL/LB), Sean Price (Sr., OL/DL), Ryan McCoin (Sr., WR), Dakota Flippen (Jr., QB/DB), Brandon Jones (Jr., WR/DB)
The Word: After 3 straight winning seasons, Chisum dropped to 3-7 in 2010. And, with the departure of quarterback T.J. Briscoe to graduation, wins won’t get any easier. Briscoe accounted for close to 66% of the Mustangs’ total offense last season. Quarterbacking duties will likely fall to junior Dakota Flippen who received some experience in spot duty as a sophomore. Senior Jonathon Carroll and junior Brandon Jones could split time at the runningback position. Meanwhile, Jeremy Helms and Ryan McCoin figure to be the top targets in the passing game. Helms was a second team all-district performer as a junior. Kaylen Miller, Sean Price, San Marcos Pratt and Noe Recendiz will lead the charge up front for the Mustangs. Defensively the Mustangs only return 3 starters and must replace most of their top tacklers from a year ago. Miller will be relied on to lead the defensive front. Miller could get help from senior Sean Price. Jeremy Helms figures to operate at linebacker along with Recendiz. Jones, Carroll and Flippen will likely all see time in the secondary for the Mustangs. The Mustangs return only 10 lettermen, so many players will likely see significant time on both sides of the football.

COMO-PICKTON EAGLES
Enrollment: 211 (6)
2010 Record: 3-7
The Coach: Paul Tullis
The Players: Trevor Cagle (Sr., WR/DB), Brodie Ogle (Sr., TE/LB), Even Tellez (Sr., TE/LB), Bryce Steele (Jr., RB/LB), Hank Tullis (Jr., WR/DB), Matthew Sharp (Jr., FB/OLB), Heath Howard (Jr., OL/LB)
The Word: Coach Tullis is hoping a strong core group of players can help the Eagles improve over the 3 wins they put together last season. A total of 15 starters return, including a whopping 9 on defense. The Eagles will be led by Trevor Cagle, an exceptional athlete that has excelled on both sides of the football. Cagle (6’1” 180 lbs.) was an all-district wide receiver and defensive back for the Eagles in 2010. Junior Hank Tullis will join Cagle in the defensive backfield after being named second team all-district as a sophomore. Tullis has a nose for the football and piled up a ton of tackles from his safety position. The Eagles will also boast a strong linebacking unit in 2011. Brodie Ogle (6’0” 190 lbs.), Even Tellez (6’0” 190 lbs.) and Bryce Steele (6’2” 215 lbs.) all have good size. Steele also plays runningback for the Eagles, where he rushed for more than a 1,100 yards in 2010. Matthew Sharp is another junior who Coach Tullis is hoping will make a big impact on both sides of the football for the Eagles. Sharp plays fullback and outside linebacker as well as returns kicks for Coach Tullis’ club. Heath Howard returns to anchor the offensive line. The 6’1” 235 pound junior offensive guard was an honorable mention all-district performer a season ago. With an enrollment of just over 200 students, Como-Pickton is the smallest school in the district. But, with a strong nucleus of players, the Eagles are hoping to compete for wins in district 7.

2A-2 District 8

HUGHES SPRINGS MUSTANGS
Enrollment: 291 (1)
2010 Record: 9-2; 2A Div. 2 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Chris Edwards
The Players: Davuntae Hatten (Sr., QB), Cody Murphy (Sr., RB/LB), Ryan Russell (Sr., OL), Decorian Allen (Sr., RB/LB), Cade Avant (Sr., OL/DL), William Hall (Sr., OL), Dustin Traylor (Sr., DB), Dalton Martin (Sr., DL), Kaddarian Chism (Jr., OL), Eric Berryhill (Jr., LB), Josh Anton (Jr., OL), Shane Finney (Jr., LB), Zachary Basshum (Jr., WR/DB), Cameron Brewer (Jr., DL), Chad McKinney (So., RB)
The Word: The Mustangs won a district title in 2010, before losing a close game to Gunter in the first round of the playoffs. The Mustangs’ Slot T offense, which piled up nearly 38 points a game, was the main reason Hughes Springs was able to put together an impressive 9-2 record. Coach Chris Edwards will have to find a way to replace all-state fullback Brent Giddens who was lost to graduation. The loss of Giddens will be eased by the return of 14 lettermen and 8 starters. The Mustangs welcome back quarterback Davuntae Hatten, who compiled nearly 1,500 combined yards rushing and passing in 2010. Senior Cody Murphy, who has rushed for more than 1,000 total yards over the last 2 years combined, will move from halfback to fullback for the Mustangs. Runningbacks Decorian Allen and Chad McKinney will also see touches in the Mustangs’ run-oriented offense. The offensive line should be solid with returning starters Ryan Russell and Kadarrian Chism. The 6’3” 280 pound Russell was second team all-district, while Chism (5’9” 215lbs.) was a first team selection. Josh Anton, Cade Avant and William Hall will round out the offensive line. Split end Zachary Basshum and tight end Hunter Hanson each have good speed and should be effective in the play action passing game for the Mustangs. On defense, the Mustangs will be led by linebackers Eric Berryhill, Shane Finney and Decorian Allen. A couple of senior defensive ends, Dalton Martin and Cade Avant, will solidify the defensive line. Junior Cameron Brewer and sophomore Mercer McCoo will join Martin and Avant on the line. Zachary Basshum and Dustin Garamillo will operate at the corners, while Trenton Shelton and Dustin Traylor will man the safety positions. Besides Berryhill and Avant, the defense does not have a lot of experience, with only 3 returning starters. So, the offense may have to carry the Mustangs in the early part of the season while the defense comes together. However, a strong junior class and help from a junior varsity team that went 9-0 last season should have the Mustangs competing for a district championship once again.

ELYSIAN FIELDS YELLOWJACKETS
Enrollment: 251.5 (3)
2010 Record: 4-6
The Coach: Eric King
The Players: Jackson McCarty (Sr., OL), Garrett Kelley (Sr., CB), Isaiah Golden (Jr., OL/DL), Christian Smith (Jr., QB/DB), Bruce Woods (Jr., LB), Trevor Spears (Jr., WR/DB), Nathan Hall (Jr., RB/DB), Don Deramus (Jr., TE), Alonzo Macon (Jr., RB/KR), Clay Vance (Jr., OL/LB), Winfred Taylor (Jr., OL/DL), Terry Jones (Jr., OL/DL), Kevin Jones (Jr., OL/DL), Braden Jett (So., OL/DL), Tanner Norman (So., LB), Tanner Davis (So., LB), T.J. Clark (So., WR), Zach Holcomb, (So., OL/DL)
The Word: Since making it to the state finals in 2007, the Yellowjackets have gone 6-3, 5-5, and 4-6. But, that trend looks about ready to change. Coach Eric King welcomes back 24 lettermen, including 18 starters (9 on offense and 9 on defense). Most of those starters will be underclassmen, so a two year run by the Yellowjackets may be in store. On offense Coach King will likely start 7 juniors, 3 sophomores and 1 senior. Junior quarterback Christian Smith returns after throwing for nearly 1,000 yards and rushing for over 600 yards in his sophomore season. Nathan Hall will make the move from receiver to runningback in 2011 after being named second team all-district on both sides of the football last year. Sophomore Colby Simmons will try to lead the way from his fullback position. The Yellowjackets should have a strong receiving corps with Zane Barge, T.J. Clark and Don Deramus. According to Coach King, the 6’2” 230 pound Deramus is a “freak of nature with excellent size and speed.” The offensive line will be anchored by 6’3” 300 pound Isaiah Golden. Just a junior, Golden has been an impact player on both sides of the ball since his freshman year. Golden has the size and speed (4.85 – 40) to play college ball at the highest level. Joining Golden on the line should be Zach Holcomb, Clay Vance, Terry Jones and Jackson McCarty. Golden and Jones will also form the defensive line along with sophomore Braden Jett and junior Winfred Taylor. The linebackers will be led by junior strong side linebacker, Bruce Woods, who recorded 113 tackles last season and Clay Vance, who makes the move from defensive end to middle linebacker for the Jackets. Sophomore Tanner Norman will also hold down one of the linebacker positions. Drake Davis and Garrett Kelley, will each occupy a cornerback position. Meanwhile, Trevor Spears and T.J. Clark will form a strong safety tandem. Spears picked off 5 passes last season. Coach King’s club looks to be vastly improved from a season ago and should pick up a playoff spot.

HARLETON WILDCATS
Enrollment: 215 (6)
2010 Record: 5-6; 2A Div. 2 Bi-District Finalist
The Coach: Dennis Alexander
The Players: Levi Johnson (Sr., TE/DE), Jacob Holmes (Sr., WR), Jabe Martin (Sr., WR), LeMune Beecham (Sr., RB), Austin Stringfellow (Sr., RB), Casey Morris (Sr., QB/RB), Matt Wright (Sr., OL/DL), Clay Hooten (Sr., OL), Lewis Wilson (Jr., LB), Brooks Lloyd (Jr., WR)
The Word: Coach Dennis Alexander is the winningest coach at three different high school programs: Daingerfield (129), Henderson (98) and Harleton (75). DA is 318-119-11 in 39 years as a head coach and number 4 on the list of winningest coaches in Texas High School Football history behind G.A Moore – 422, Gordon Wood – 395, and Phil Danaher – 367. Alexander guided his Harleton Wildcats to a playoff berth in 2010. It was the eighth straight playoff appearance for the Wildcats. Harleton had made the playoffs only 3 times in its history prior to Alexander’s arrival. This season the Wildcats return 14 lettermen and 12 starters. Offensively, the Wildcats will be led by senior receivers Jacob Holmes and Jabe Martin. Martin and Holmes combined for close to 800 yards receiving in 2010. Brooks Lloyd will also provide a quality target at wide receiver after making a significant impact for the Wildcats as a sophomore. In addition, 6’1” 205 pound tight end Levi Johnson can be an imposing presence as well. However, the graduation of quarterback Billy Smith leaves a vacancy under center. So, a new trigger-man who can get the ball to all the receivers is a must. Senior Casey Morris could make the move from runningback to quarterback this season. Meanwhile, runningbacks LeMune Beecham, and Austin Stringfellow should both see carries in Harleton’s offense. Junior linebacker Lewis Wilson will be one of the leaders of the defense along with Johnson who will operate at defensive end. Harleton is the smallest school in the district and depth could be an issue for the Wildcats. But, Alexander knows how to get the most out of what he has. A ninth straight playoff appearance is possible.

LINDEN-KILDARE TIGERS
Enrollment: 261 (2)
2010 Record: 10-3; 2A Div. 2 Regional Semi-Finalist
The Coach: Todd Elliott
The Players: Rashodrick Linwood (Sr., WR/DB), Trey Darty (Sr., WR/DB), Chevy Smith (Sr., OL), John Coe (Sr. OL/DL), John Dawson (Sr., OL/DL), Jonathan Hall (Sr., OL/LB), Jacob Marshall (Sr., OL/LB), Greg Stephens (Jr., RB/LB), Rodick Lawson (Jr., RB), Jacob Tucker (Jr., OL/DL), Travis Horn (So., LB)
The Word: In 2010, the Tigers advanced all the way to the third round of the playoffs before falling 31-27 to Paul Pewitt in one of the most memorable games of the entire season. A strong senior class has departed leaving the Tigers with plenty of holes to fill. One place to start filling those holes is with multi-talented Rashodrick Linwood. Aptly nick-named “Shock,” Linwood is an electrifying athlete. Linwood has seen time at runningback, wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner for the Tigers. The 5’9” 180 pound Linwood rushed for nearly 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2010. Linwood is one of the top recruiting prospects in the area and has given a verbal commitment to play for the TCU horned frogs. Wide receiver Trey Darty will provide the Tigers with another offensive weapon after scoring 4 receiving touchdowns a year ago. Meanwhile, junior runningbacks Greg Stephens and Rodick Lawson will be asked to play a much larger role in the offense after seeing some spot duty last season. Seniors Chevy Smith, John Coe, John Dawson, Jonathan Hall and Jacob Marshall will all likely see time on the offensive line. Junior Jacob Tucker may also be asked to contribute along the offensive front. Defensively, the Tigers will be led by Darty and Linwood. Darty intercepted 5 passes in 2010. Stephens will likely start at linebacker for the Tigers. Meanwhile Hall and Coe could see time on the defensive line. The Tigers lost a big and talented senior class from a year ago. Only 6 lettermen return from last year’s regional semi-finalist team. Replacing all of the pieces will not be easy. Expect some growing pains for this young team.

ORE CITY REBELS
Enrollment: 228 (5)
2010 Record: 5-5
The Coach: Bobby Chadwick
The Players: Jonathan Ramsey (Sr., RB/DB), Dalton Hildreth (Sr., QB/DB), Kendrick Gilstrap (Sr., WR/LB), Thomas Hart (Sr., WR/DB), Nicky Chavez (Sr., OL/DL), Travis Lloyd (Sr., OL/DL), Andrew Westmoreland (Sr., OL/DL), Craver Thomas (Sr., OL/LB), A.J. Casey (Jr., LB), Jarmarkus Boyd (Jr., RB/DB), Josh Reeves (Jr., DB), Keynon Whetstone (So., QB/RB/WR/DB), Deste Tatum (So., WR/DB)
The Word: Ore City won 5 games in 2010, but won only 1 district game. However, there is hope for Bobby Chadwick’s club as a number of lettermen return, including sensational sophomore Keynon Whetstone. Whetstone was the district newcomer of the year after bursting on to the scene as a freshman. The 5’9” 150 pound Whetstone did a little bit of everything for the Rebels, putting up more than 1,300 all purpose yards while playing quarterback, runningback, wide receiver and defensive back. It remains to be seen how Coach Chadwick will use Whetstone this year. Senior quarterback Dalton Hildreth returns to give the Rebels another viable option at quarterback. Hildreath threw for 1,300 yards and rushed for nearly 500 more last season. Senior Jonathan Ramsey and junior Jarmarkus Boyd should both see time at runningback for the Rebels. Wide receivers Kendrick Gilstrap and Thomas Hart will provide targets in the passing game. Both have good size. Sophomore Deste Tatum will provide an additional target at wide receiver. Like Whetstone, Tatum provided the Rebels with significant production on both sides of the football as just a freshman. Defensively, Nicky Chavez, Travis Lloyd and Andrew Westmoreland will all play key roles on the defensive line. Meanwhile, Kendrick Gilstrap and A.J. Casey will lead the linebacking corps. Whetstone and Tatum will patrol the secondary after each picked off 2 passes a year ago. Help in the secondary will likely come from Josh Reeves and Dalton Hildreth. The Rebels have a nucleus of young talent, but a playoff berth will be tough to come by given the teams in this district.

WASKOM WILDCATS
Enrollment: 235 (4)
2010 Record: 3-7
The Coach: Whitney Keeling
The Players: Kylan Jackson (Sr., QB/DB), Jason Spurlin (Sr., OL/DL), Caliel Luster (Sr., OL/DL), Curtis Hayley (Sr., RB), Shelton Booth (Sr., DB), Javier Sanchez (Jr., OL/DL), Brandon Edel (Jr., WR/DB)
The Word: The Wildcats have not been to the playoffs since 1992. Coach Keeling and his returning lettermen would like nothing more than to end that streak this year. Senior quarterback Kylan Jackson is one of 4 returning offensive starters for Coach Keeling. Jackson will operate Waskom’s spread offense and hopes to improve upon the 11.5 points per game the Wildcats managed last season. Helping him in that quest for improvement will be runningback Curtis Hayley. The 5’9” 170 pound Hayley rushed for more than 500 yards last season. Wide receiver Brandon Edel also returns after hauling in 12 passes as a sophomore. Offensive linemen Justin Spurlin, Javier Sanchez and Caliel Luster will lead the way up front. Spurlin, Sanchez and Luster will also form the defensive line for the Wildcats. Edel and Jackson will man the cornerback positions. Jackson picked off 4 passes last season. Senior Shelton Booth will occupy the free safety position in Waskom’s 4-4 defense. The big question for a defense that returns just 3 starters is: who will play linebacker for the Wildcats? Waskom lost their 5 district games in 2010 by an average score of 44-11. Leap-frogging 3 of their district foes in order to make the playoffs will be very difficult for the Wildcats.

2A-2 District 9

ARP TIGERS
Enrollment: 288 (1)
2010 Record: 6-7; 2A Div. 2 Regional Semi-Finalist
The Coach: Dale Irwin
The Players: Kyle Copeland (Sr., QB/DB), Kasey McClendon (Sr., RB/LB), Bryan McKnight (Sr., OL), Bryce Chilton (Sr., OL), Bran Holloway (Sr., WR/DB), Brenan Brabec (Sr. OLB), D.J. Riley (Sr., LB), Eddie Perez (Sr., OL/DL), Brady Hill (Sr., OL/DL), Matthew Arnold (Sr., TE) Zach Yancey (Sr., DL), Mike Potts (Jr., RB/DB), Corey Ayers (Jr., OL/DL), Michael Roberson (Jr., WR/DB)
The Word: After winning at least 10 games for 3 straight years, the Arp Tigers won 6 games in 2010 and finished the regular season third in their district. But, the Tigers still made the playoffs for the fourth straight year, and managed to advance all the way to the third round before dropping a close game to district rival West Rusk in the regional semi-finals. Coach Irwin’s club returns a talented backfield that will be charged with running a newly installed veer offense after the Tigers switched offensive schemes midway through the season last year. Senior quarterback Kyle Copeland returns for his third season as a starter. The 6’1” 190 pound Copeland is quite possibly the best athlete on the team. Copeland (1,180 yards rushing) is a good runner and an efficient passer. Runningback Kasey McClendon joins Copeland in the backfield. McClendon (1,184 yards rushing) is a powerful runner with good vision. Junior Mike Potts will line up alongside McClendon in the split back formation. Potts had a great sophomore season for the Tigers as a receiver and a runningback as well as on defense. Potts was named district newcomer of the year for his efforts. The offensive line looks to be in good shape with the return of Bryan McKnight, Bryce Chilton and Corey Ayers. At 6’5” 265 pounds, McKnight has the size to play at the next level. Receivers Michael Roberson and Bran Holloway as well as tight end Matthew Arnold will be the main targets in the passing game. Eddie Perez, Corey Ayers, Zach Yancey and Brady Hill make up the defensive front for the Tigers. Seniors D.J. Riley and Kasey McClendon will operate at inside linebacker, while Brennan Brabec and Mike Potts will man the outside linebacker positions. Holloway and Copeland will line up at cornerback and Michael Roberson returns at free safety for the Tigers. Coach Irwin and the Tigers hope to return to the role of district bully, but a talented Frankston team will push the Tigers for the district title.

FRANKSTON INDIANS
Enrollment: 231 (3)
2010 Record: 8-4; 2A Div. 2 Area Finalist
The Coach: Sam Wells
The Players: Treston Coleman (Sr., RB/DB), Michael Warren (Sr., QB/DB), Dillon Dale (Sr., OL), Ashton Pierce (Sr., OL/DL), Andrew Dansby (Sr., WR/DB), Quinnderick Jordan (Sr., WR/OLB), Dillon Reynolds (Sr., OL), Tye Griffin (Sr., WR/LB), Austin Brumit (Sr., DL), Dustin House (Jr., OL/DL), Caleb Williams (Jr., WR/CB), J.J. Kummer (Jr., OL), Jessis Davis (Jr., DL), Zack Wright (Jr., LB)
The Word: The Indians finished 8-4 in 2010 and captured their first playoff win since 2002 when they eliminated New Waverly in the first round of the playoffs. The following week, the Indians lost a close contest to eventual state finalist Lexington in the area round. Coach Wells welcomes back 13 lettermen and 9 starters (7 on offense and 2 on defense). But, he will have to find replacements for Jabralon and Jamal Allen who signed to play ball for the SFA Lumberjacks. Runningback Treston Coleman returns after gaining 1670 yards combined rushing and receiving and scoring 17 total touchdowns in 2010. The 5’11” 205 pound Coleman has drawn the attention of several colleges including Texas A&M and Texas Tech. Michael Warren will make the switch from wide receiver to quarterback and become the new signal caller in Frankston’s spread offense. Warren has exceptional speed and could be one of the fastest players in the district. Wide receivers Stetson Hoskins, Andrew Dansby, Tye Griffin and Quinnderick Jordan will operate out wide for the Indians. Griffin is a big target at 6’3” and 190 pounds. All state offensive lineman Dustin House (6’2” 250 lbs.) will anchor a solid offensive line. Joining House up front should be J.J. Kummer, Ashton Pierce, Dillon Dale and Dillon Reynolds. The 320 pound Dale was an all-district performer last season. New faces will abound on defense, where only 2 starters return for the Indians. House will lead the defensive front along with Austin Brumit, Jessie Davis and Ashton Pierce. Zack Wright and Tye Griffin will be the inside linebackers in Coach Wells’ split defense. Caleb Williams and Quinnderick Jordan will be the outside linebackers. Warren and Coleman will pull double duty and man the cornerback positions. Meanwhile, Dansby will play free safety. If all the new starters can come together on defense, Frankston has a chance to challenge for the district title.

WEST RUSK RAIDERS
Enrollment: 216 (4)
2010 Record: 12-1; 2A Div 2 Quarterfinalist
The Coach: John Frazier
The Players: Sam Carter (Sr., WR/LB), Keenon Murphy (Sr., DT), Levi Wingate (Sr., OL), Colton Allen (Sr., OL), Tra Gordon (Sr., WR/DB), Josh Reese (Sr., FB/DL), Terrance Medford (Sr., WR/DB), Billy Ray Murphy (Sr., DL), Josh Moore (Sr., OL/DL), Broc Bower (Sr., OL/DL), Dustin Bell (Jr., OL/DL)
The Word: Coach John Frazier is 35-11 since taking over at West Rusk in 2007 and has led the Raiders to 3 straight playoff appearances. 2010 was the most successful season in school history, with the Raiders chalking up 12 wins and advancing all the way to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by a strong Lexington team. However, Coach Frazier now faces possibly his biggest challenge with the departure of 17 seniors and a host of starters. On defense, the Raiders will have to replace their top 4 leading tacklers and a number of 3 year starters. Senior linebacker Sam Carter and defensive tackle Keenon Murphy will be called on to take over leadership roles for the Raiders after putting together strong junior performances. Murphy was a second team all-district selection a season ago. Murphy will be joined on the defensive line by fellow seniors Josh Reese and Billy Ray Murphy. Defensive back Terrance Medford will lead the secondary with help from Tra Gordon. Levi Wingate and Colton Allen return to anchor the offensive line for the Raiders. Wingate (6’0” 250 lbs.) was a first team all-district center in 2010, while Allen (6’3” 270 lbs.) was a second team selection playing offensive tackle. Reese is the leading returning rusher for the Raiders after gaining nearly 400 yards last season. Meanwhile Gordon is the top receiver returning after hauling in 2 scores in 2010. Coach Frazier’s team will be very inexperienced in 2010. But, Frazier has changed the culture at West Rusk over the last 4 years from struggling program to annual playoff team. While the Raiders may take a step back from where they have been the last 3 years, a playoff push is still a strong possibility.

GLADEWATER UNION GROVE LIONS
Enrollment: 214 (5)
2009 Record: 4-6
The Coach: Marty Moore
The Players: Tyler Webb (Sr., OL/DL), Mark Owens (Sr., OL/DL), Partrick Ryan (Sr., OL/DL), Hunter Gibson (Sr., RB/LB), Brian Richardson (Sr., LB), Garrett Gibson (So., RB/LB)
The Word: Union Grove has a 69% all-time winning percentage in the playoffs. Getting there has been the hard part. The Lions haven’t been to the playoffs since 1968. However, the Lions have actually competed fairly well over the last 3 years, compiling a 14-16 overall record during that time. Coach Marty Moore’s team will welcome back a total of 17 starters in 2011 and a playoff berth is not totally out of the realm of possibility. Offensively the Lions will be led by runningbacks Garrett and Hunter Gibson. Hunter (5’11” 180 lbs.) was a second team all-district selection for the Lions in 2010 after rushing for more than 1,800 yards. Garrett Gibson was a productive runningback, as well as a standout on defense, leading the team in tackles as just a freshman. The offensive line will be anchored by Tyler Webb, a three year starter. The senior tackle was a second team all-district selection a year ago. Webb should be joined up front by big Mark Owens and Patrick Ryan. The 6’3” 305 pound Owens is also a standout on the defensive line having racked up 71 tackles and 4 sacks in his all-district junior season. Linebacker Brian Richardson is another defensive standout who was a first team all-district selection. Richardson and Owens will be joined on the defensive side of the ball by linebacker Hunter Gibson and district defensive newcomer of the year Garrett Gibson. Union Grove should have a chance to compete for district wins in 2011.

JOAQUIN RAMS
Enrollment: 201 (6)
2010 Record: 4-6
The Coach: Wayne Gandy
The Players: Austin Underbrink (Sr., OL/DL), Austin Bloodgood (Sr., RB/LB), Kain Yates (Sr., RB/DB), Holden Cummings (Sr., OL/LB), Andrew Dean (Sr., TE/OLB), Cody Runnels (Sr., TE/DL), Zach Mason (Sr., OL/DL), T.J. Mitchell (Sr., OL/DL), Shelby Runnels (Sr., OL/DL), Nick Cheatwood (Jr., RB/DB), Will Vaughn (Jr., QB/OLB), Wyatt Hairgrove (Jr., WR/DB), Tra Rogers (Jr., FB/LB), Cody Causey (Jr., OL/LB), Allen Woodfin (Jr., OL/DL), Zach Wildes (Jr., OL/DL)
The Word: The 2010 realignment did nothing to help Joaquin, who wound up in 2A, missing the cutoff for 1A by a mere 2 students. The Rams finished 4-6 overall, but fared poorly in their new district going 1-4 and scoring just 7.5 points per game in their 4 district losses. The Rams return 18 starters in 2011 so improvement could be on the way. Both Austin Bloodgood and Kain Yates return at runningback after hugely productive junior seasons in Joaquin’s run-oriented offense. The two runners combined for well over 2000 yards rushing in 2010. Junior runningback Nick Cheatwood should also see significant carries after averaging over 6 yards per carry as a sophomore. Quarterback Will Vaughn and fullback Tra Rogers should round out the offensive backfield in the Rams’ double-wing attack. Offensive tackle Austin Underbrink will headline a good offensive line for the Rams. Underbrink (6’2” 270 lbs.) is a big, strong lineman who bench presses well over 300 pounds and squats 500. Zach Wildes, Allen Woodfin and Zach Mason will join Underbrink on the line. Big tight end Cody Runnels will also play a key role blocking for the Rams. Linebackers Holden Cummings and Cody Causey will spearhead the Rams’ defensive attack. Outside linebackers Andrew Dean and Will Vaughn should round out the linebacker corps. Underbrink will lead the defensive line along with Cody and Shelby Runnels. Defensive back Nick Cheatwood proved he has a nose for the football picking off 4 passes as a sophomore. He should be joined in the defensive backfield by Yates. Being one of the smaller schools in 2A means depth could be an issue for the Rams. Expect the Rams to compete better in their second year in 2A.

WINONA WILDCATS
Enrollment: 239 (2)
2009 Record: 1-9
The Coach: Darold Turner
The Players: Damian Gordon (Sr., RB/LB), Joey Dikes (Sr., QB/LB), James Williams (Sr., OL/DL), David Ellis (Sr., OL/DL), Mitchell McKinney (Sr., TE/LB), William Woodruff (Sr., TE/LB), Patrick Campbell (Sr., OL/DL), Jacob Moseley (Jr., TE/DE), Corey Campbell (Jr., DB), Colton Chadbourne (Jr., RB/DB), Ronnie Marsh (Jr., OL), Brodrick Thompson (Jr., RB/OLB)
The Word: Winona endured a 1-9 season in 2010. In 2011, the Wildcats will rely heavily on seniors Damian Gordon and Joey Dikes. Gordon was a second team all-district selection as a runningback and as a linebacker in 2010. Meanwhile, Dikes was a second team selection at quarterback. Gordon and Dikes should get help on offense from junior runningbacks Brodrick Thompson and Colton Chadbourne. Tight ends Jacob Mosely and William Woodruff will also provide help in both the running and passing game for the Wildcats. Ronnie Marsh will be the leader of the offensive line after being named second team all-district as a sophomore. Marsh should be joined by seniors James Williams, David Ellis and Patrick Campbell. Ellis is huge at 6’5” and better than 300 pounds. Gordon will lead the defense from his linebacker position. Woodruff and Thompson will likely operate at linebacker alongside Gordon. James Williams will work along the defensive line and will be joined up front by defensive end Jacob Moseley. Corey Campbell and Colton Chadbourne will likely see time in the secondary for the Wildcats. Coach Darold Turner would like to get things on track in his third year at Winona.
